KVD 300 jerkbait

Just picked up one of these baits because they look decent, the price is right, and I’ve heard good things about them here. I tested it out in the pool the other day and the action just looked horrible to me, very little side to side darting and just a dull unnatural movement. I tried everything from gentle twitches to super aggressive snaps but couldn’t get it to look good at all. Did I get a bad bait or do these just have a super lazy action? I know a lot of you guys catch a lot of nice fish on these, I guess the only thing that matters is what the fish think of them.

They’re about the only jerkbait I throw anymore. I catch a ton of big smallies on them, and just as many big pike in the spring and fall too. The ones I use have tons of action. Never had a “dull” one, but I guess there could be one that didn’t get made right and screws up.

The 300 & the 300 Deep have accounted for a boat load of plus size brown bass for me.

My advice is don't overthink it - 

How it 'looks' in a pool, might not be as important

as how it looks in front of a hungry bass.

Go fish it and see what happens. 

For confirmation & credibility, I was going to add a video link of a plus size brown bass catch on the KVD jerkbait, but frankly there's so many I had a hard time choosing which one . . . .

Can’t argue with those results, I know jerkbaits loose some of their action the closer they get to the boat/bank so maybe they look better on a long cast then they do in the pool. I will fish it confidently and see what happens. I hope y’all have a great Christmas ?

Think you nailed it....to close.

I fish very clear water and can make a cast and visually inspect it's action whether it be a side sweep or an upward twitch, depending on how I want to present it.

And yes, the action falls off as the bait approaches the boat.

 

I'll also add this regarding suspending Jerkbaits. 

I can work them MUCH better standing up and sweeping them vs sitting in a kayak with more of an upward sweep. Imo

I thought that could be what was going on but my pointers and STX had great action at the end of the pool that matched what I had seen on a long cast in clear wate. Maybe the strike king baits just need a little more distance

Also, do not discount the rattle.  Not all jerkbaits sound the same.

I just started using them at the end of October/beginning of November. I didn't use mine a lot, but each time I threw it, I got bit. Now I didn't use mine a lot because the Vision 110 was accounting for a disgusting number of fish for me and nothing was going to beat that, but the KVD did get bit when I threw it as a change of pace. What I really like about it is its weight. Both the 300 and the 110 both claim they're 1/2 oz, but the 300 is noticably heavier. I also like the fact that it has big, thick, stout trebles. It throws well and fishes well on my 4 power Dobyns rods. I fish the 110 on a 3 power and 1-3 lb fish bent out all those stock hooks. I liked the 300 enough in my small sample size that I confidently gifted a couple in the Fishmas package I sent.

 

I'm getting ready to fish now, and the KVD 300 will get some play.

I don’t put any stock into what humans (including myself) think about lure action. I bought a bunch of hand pour soft plastics one time: swimbaits, flukes, craws, stickworms, and some beavers. The beavers look terrible in the water (to me). I’m sure you can guess where this is going, those beavers slay fish. I didn’t even have the magic “confidence” that you would think is required. I used them one day with no confidence because I couldn’t find my craws. Caught a fish. Still no confidence and then I caught a bunch of fish. I still think they look stupid in the water, but I ain’t the one eating them

I ignored beaver style baits for years because they looked stupid in the water to me. I favored craws and creatures with flapping appendages. I had no idea what I was missing until this year when I started T rigging Yomommas and shortly after the Sweet Craw. They have a natural looking glide falling on a tight line, and an erratic spiraling fall on slack, and they flat out catch fish, big and small, all year long.

The kvd’s are good jerk baits.  Put a lot of fish in the boat this fall.  Not saying they are as good or better than mega bass or lucky craft but, they do work.  Some times less is more with the action.  
 

If I’m fishing a lake with a lot of northern pike I’m throwing the KVD’s first before the mega bass or LC’s jerk baits 
 

 Only thing I don’t like about them is the hooks.  I always swap them out for Mustad KVD-Classic TG76-BN Short-Shank 1X Triple-Grips.  The th76-bns are a little bit cheaper than the th76np-bn’s which, are the kvd needle points

The 300 is one of my go to jerkbaits, especially for big green fish. It's more of a subtle bait than a lot of the other baits that have erratic darting, and cutting actions, which I think is a good thing in colder water or for pressured fish. 

 

When they eat the bait like this, there's nothing wrong with the action

You guys are right, I just love the extra confidence of fishing a bait that looks good to ME and the fish. Next time I catch a few on my pointers I will break the kvd out and see what happens

You might be doing it backwards.

If you really want to develop 'extra confidence' 

perhaps leave the pointers on the beach.

I like the 300 and the 200.. both are great in guntersville for me.  I also love the lc 100. Lc 78 is too small.

I remembered this thread when I was rigging up last weekend. This is one of my favorite KVD 300's that has seen countless big bass to the boat.

That’s a fantastic colour up here on the lakes where smallmouth are feeding on smelt and herring. Also a great colour for spring pike.
