Some of you might remember me starting a thread about my son turning 16 and getting his drivers license. As far as that goes, so far, so good. He has been on his own for a while now and done well. However, tonight as I was sitting in my tree stand I got to thinking about all the STUPID stuff I did when I was younger and how lucky I am to be where I am today. I sat there and prayed my son never acts like I did when I was younger. I did so many dumb things that I hope he never does. I drove way to fast and reckless. I went to parties that I should not have been at. I hung out with people that I should not have been hanging out with. I have never been arrested, but it certainly is not because I didn't ever need to be. As my son grows up, I just hope and pray he makes better decisions than I did. Am I the only one, or do some of you think back and think, d**n that was dumb?

BTW...I would like to add...I never sipped a drink of alcohol till I was over 21 and in college.

I doubt there's many people who can't say the same. I did some really dumb stuff that I'm not proud of. For sure didn't make it to 21 before trying alcohol, or 13 for that matter. Drove my trucks like they were unbreakable and so was I. I was pretty unbreakable until a couple close calls and losing people around me brought my mortality into question a little more. Ever play the game where you shoot an arrow into the air and try not to get hit by it when it comes down? That was something we did a lot for some reason. One of my buddies had the arrow stick right through his jeans but only scratched his leg a little. Why? Why did we think that was a good idea?

My biggest flex is I made it this far without ever sampling any illicit drugs, not even weed. The person running the lie detector asked me about 10 different ways when I applied for my job because I guess that's just not a question people answer no to and pass.

With having 2 boys, both of them that act like they're feral half the time, I'm sure they're going to put some grey hairs on my head before too long.

Did I ever do anything stupid back in the day? No, I did not. I’d classify it as REAL stupid. Sometimes it’s a wonder the human race persists.

   Is this a trick question?

You remember those great big, thick unabridged dictionaries that they used to have sitting on a little stand in libraries? You know ... the ones that had little pictures next to some words to illustrate them?  Well, if you looked up the word "stupid", it had a little picture of me next to it.  ? ?       jj

When I look back on my mid & late teens,

"Ten Foot Tall & Bullet Proof" comes to mind.

Growing up in the 70's was like a free for all.

Besides that, I'm certain mature adults had no problem

associating the words disrespectful and selfish in my general direction.

And I earned it.

I am honestly embarrassed by much of how that deal went.

Thankfully, I somehow managed to surround myself with folks

who epitomized the polar opposite of all of that.

Final realized that the world didn't revolve around me.

I was beyond stupid.  I was a troubled kid that got involved in some very shady things and lived a very reckless life.  I did (and was involved in the...let's call it, the "logistical" side of things) all the drugs, drank all the liquor, and lived VERY recklessly.  The only thing I ever had going for me was a strong work ethic and a pretty strong survival instinct.  Having daughters changed all that.  I figured out that I wanted to be a Daddy more than I wanted to be a screw up.  I've been clean and sober for a long time and my life is completely different today.  I have a great job, a loving wife, daughters that love and respect me and a great, peaceful life as I ease into middle and old age.  I never have to worry about a "mid-life crisis" as ALL my wild oats have been sowed.  I've always been pretty open with my daughters about my life back then and tried to help guide them away from that type of life.  They are 26 and 22 and living happy, productive lives, Thank God.

BTW....My daughters are the reason why a big ol' 53 year old redneck like me has the handle "JadeRose".  Their middle names.  Jade and Rose.

The United States Constitution protects every person from having “to be a witness against himself.” This is known as the privilege against self-incrimination, or “pleading the 5th.” The Fifth Amendment privilege extends to statements that would by themselves support conviction of a crime as well as to statements which ...

I’ve thought about this quite a bit now that my son is getting older. I did a ton of stupid stuff as a kid!

I did a lot of things my parents didn’t know about and things they did know about especially when the school called and said your son has been suspended or when the police show up at your house. We never did anything disrespectful or damaging to peoples property, or steal. My criminal and driving records are clean as a whistle (thankfully).

I had a great life growing up, but I think I had a little too much freedom and my parents trusted me more than they should have, and didn’t ask enough questions. That being said you reach a point whether you’re an adult or a minor where you know what you’re doing and the potential consequences for your actions. I did a lot of dumb things, but I also think most do as a kid and to some extent it’s a part of growing up. If my son does stupid stuff (which he will) I hope he’s smart enough to not do things that could get him killed, seriously hurt, or in trouble with the law, and I hope he realizes the stupid stuff he’s doing and doesn’t do them again. If he does get caught I hope he’s ready to face the consequences.

Done anything stupid? Um..yeah..lots of times. Started drinking alcohol at 16 to excess. Drove home drunk and wondered in the morning how u even got home. Driven gravel roads and dark back roads way too fast with no seat belt. Not proud of any of it..but it did happen. I've been fortunate in that I never killed anybody or myself. These days I'm older and wiser..I stay away from such dumb activities.

Man...Great post.

I too, have young sons — two of them, Jack and Walter (2.5 and 5 respectively).  I have also thought long and hard about the things I've done in my past and how I barely made it out of adolescence and my early twenties alive.  I mean, Joyriding my parents car multiple times at 14, and a hit and run at that age, driving drunk numerous times on VERY windy sheer cliff roads in the Malibu Canyon, parties where I blacked out, wrong crowd etc.  It's insane, and it makes me insane to think about what my boys will have to face as far as peer pressure and hormones and a not-fully-developed-brain at the age of Teen.

Somehow, though, I made it through.  I don't know how, and I don't know why (Other than to be the father to my two boys, 'cause THAT is the joy of my life).  I guess we just give 'em the best of what we got, and pray for the rest.  It IS important to have a little fun along the way, too, I suppose ...

I feel you here to. Whenever people ask me about drugs and I say don't know I've never even smoked weed the response is usually yeah right whatever dude. Then I look them in the eye and say I'm serious.. Most people just say wow. Hell my dad asked me a while back I said I've never tried it..he just said "really? Never?".

Problem is teens can go drastically one way or the other.

I happened to be other with drunkenness and many driving tickets and continued this behavior late into my twenties.

Had 2 beautiful daughters and one was a saint and the other chose the path of destruction as I did.

The oldest was a drug addict and aged the wife and I 10 fold but persevered and all is good.

About all you can do is hope and pray.

Oh did you say treestand? Got this one yesterday.

I never drank to excess or got into experimenting with drugs, which is probably a good thing because when I got my drivers license I had a real heavy lead foot.  I use to love to open her up on the highway and I hit the century mark more than a few times.

I finally slowed down when one of my friends passed away in a wreck and quite a few more had to sell their cars because of accidents.

Lots of dumb stuff growing up driving way to fast(still do this though) we used to have our red rider BB guns and pace off then turn and shoot each other with them wearing carhartt jackets which then turned into air soft then paintball.

drinking oh yeah like a fish in highschool could always tell where I parked at basketball games there would be a pile of cans left that I tossed under my car when done because I would go out and drink during halftime.

never done any drugs though even to this day not even weed and drinking for the most part has stopped I still have whiskey once in a while but I only drink maybe once a month if that.

I used to be wild though shocked I didn’t have kids at a much younger age if ya know what I mean haha. I made it through my teens and early twenties scratch free though lots of things I shouldn’t have walked away from but did. Wasn’t till my accident at work 3 years ago that I finally broke a bone and got injured but even that some how I’ve pulled out of and would never know I got hit by a truck and seriously injured. But used to drive fast like I said I’ve wrecked a lot of cars and wheelers and gotten into fights always walked away from it all with no injuries.

You mention Mom. Mom would actually thank me for not getting out of line in public. I tend to have no filter although the older I get, the less I want to deal with confrontation...but I am also less patient. Mom has been gone for 18 months or so and I still respect her authority. Everyone else's, not so much.

2 DWIs, a couple posessions, and then thank God I joined the Navy at 22 years old. Retired Navy and Civil Service. I muddled through and ended up with a pot to tinkle in. Work ethic and dumb luck.

Sorry to hear that.  I fear my mom’s wrath, so that keep me in line most of the time.  ?

I did HVAC all summer, and a bunch’ve the houses we went into and installed AC’s into, smelled like weed.  Gives me a dang old headache and a bad taste in my mouth every time.  I think I’ll stay away from drugs and drinking. ?
