I was skimming over the manual for my Garmin units and it sounds like it's useful to leave a blank Micro SD in the unit to take advantage of some of the features.  Am I reading this correctly?  I've already used the cards to update the software.

I keep one in my 93sv so I can easily transfer screenshots I've taken on the water to my computer.

Yes, you will need the card to store screenshots and waypoints as well as ActiveCaptain.

After you have done the update, just erase the card and put it back in the unit.  That update info on the card is no longer needed once you put in the unit and it updated from it.  It will automatically load the info on the card that's needed and then you can use it for extra storage.

Yup, cough up the $9 and get an SD card and call it good.

Thanks.  I have a lot to learn with these units

We all do. There are several of us on here with new Garmins this year, so maybe we can all learn together.

I actually used mine for the first time this past weekend.  All that bench time I spent going through the manual and learning every feature on the unit sure was helpful.  I was perfectly comfortable being able to do what ever I wanted with it.   Swapping the side scan from side to side proved to be very helpful also.
