Dumbbassanglr Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 I just got a garmin echomap uhd on the bass pro spring sale for my paddle kayak. But I noticed someone said side imaging doesn’t work well at very slow speeds. Anybody have side imaging on their paddle kayaks? Got any tips? I don’t want to have to wear myself out paddling just to use my new unit. Quote
Super User gim Posted March 23, 2021 Super User Posted March 23, 2021 I don't know about Garmin but Lowrance says that their side imagining works best at approximately 5 mph. Maybe it says in the manual what setting is ideal. Quote
InfantryMP Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 3-5 works well for me on SI but that is with Lowrance. It will be tough to maintain that paddling all the time. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted March 24, 2021 Super User Posted March 24, 2021 You do have to be moving to use it, but it works well within the speed range of a paddled kayak. It's more useful for scanning areas when you're on the move than targeting areas you've already identified. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted March 26, 2021 Super User Posted March 26, 2021 I have a Garmin EchoMap UHD 93sv with the GT54UHD transducer and I get very good imaging going as slow as 0.8MPH. Adjust your scroll speed accordingly and you'll be fine. I believe I read that Garmin says 3-6mph is ideal, but I've seen many users who said that they prefer 1-3mph and I've gotten up to 4mph sustained and would have to say that it looks just as well as 2mph. On my Bonafide SS127, not the fastest kayak available, 2.33mph is a fairly casual paddle. 1 Quote

Kletust Posted April 5, 2021 Posted April 5, 2021 I had zero issues with a pedal kayak and a Raymarine Element. I don't see why you would have any issue while paddling other than a little possible interference from the paddle strokes. Quote
dj1975232 Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 I use a Lowrance Hook2 5 Tripleshot on my Moken 12.5. It has the sonar pod like the Lure. The transducer is almost as long as the pod opening but it sits about 5/8” below the keel when strapped in place. I get good readings out to about 30ft on either side. I’m not as confident from 30-60ft. If I dropped it another 1/2” it might do the whole 60ft on either side. Paddling at a near steady 1-1.5mph gives a good image but so does a .5-.8mph drift. I think steady speed is more important than a certain speed. Hope this helps. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 It will work fine I use it on my trolling motor. Quote

With my transducer mounted in the center of my kayak and slightly to the front of where I paddle, I don't even notice any interference from paddle strokes. Quote
