My GoPro is coming today. What body mount?

My wife bought me a new GP9. 
 

i have the older head mount and the chest rig.  I figured out quickly my level of mountain biking is boring as hell and I put them in storage.  
 

now?   Kayak fishing!!  (My motorcycle rides are boring as well). What perspective do you like better?   Chest view or head top view?

Perhaps something to keep in mind when making your decision . . . . 

The challenging aspect of a head mount centers around the wearers ability to maintain the camera focus on whatever the wearer is doing, the entire time the camera is on. 

When the head is looking all over the place, as a watcher, nausea ensues; at least for me.

The chest mount can be OK.

However when bass fishing, the anglers hands, rod & reel are usually pretty close to the camera.

So often times that's mostly what ends up being recorded.

If you can, get two. I use a head one, and like I said in a recent thread (and AJ said above), you will learn real fast how often you really move your head when you watch the vids. You can train yourself, and edit out the shaky stuff. Or maybe not, give it a try.

 

My early vids were really bad but I have a better camera now (motion stabilization) and am aware I'm recording, at least enough to get good edited videos. It's not like I'm constantly thinking about the camera, but sometimes I do plus I guess I'm used to it.

 

And tell you what, when you're fighting and landing that fish you will be focused right on it the entire time. When I'm playing with a T-Rig I look all over the place, but once I get a strike I'm on it. And that's the best part.

 

I shoot some panoramic shots too. Can use them to replace shaky footage while keeping audio that you still want to include.

 

Anyways, the second cam I like to put on shore somewhere, or mount it behind you on the yak, ala Greg Blanchard.

 

In a kayak your head will look around but your chest will remain pretty forward facing. With a head mount, if my eyes saw it then I got it on video as well. I don't miss anything that way. Chest mount you might miss the battle and any fish jumping.

 

Get a $20 pack of goPro mounts and try them all.

I use one of those hat brim clip mounts. Looks like a giant clip some people use on chip bags. It's never fallen off. Get a hat with a strong brim  

 

I like it because I can grab the cam easily and point it at something, or myself, or stick it underwater. You can also clip it to tree branches, your yak, or even your rod for some weird shots.

Here is an example of a catch on a headcam (vid starts halfway through the catch). I pretty much look down only to make sure I don't fall off the dock. And ya I get excited. This was during the California fires last year. My Dad's dock on Lake Tulloch. My 3rd largest LMB 4.2#

I have mine mounted on a telescoping painting pole. It is attached to my crate so the view is of me fishing from behind.  I just posted on the fishing reports page and there is a YouTube link in how post.

 

I have tried a head mount (too jerky) and a chest mount (good but it does get in the way a bit). I like having the camera behind me and out of the way but sometimes I think a chest mount may produce more immersive footage.

I'm trying a head-mount this year...but may go back to the shoulder-mount if it proves too jerky.

Head mount......unless you want video of your hands and rod.

Neither. Head and chest mount video are both hard to watch. Get some kind of pole mount system and go with that.
