No worries in fact I was just stating that while I appreciate your support your wasting your time! Not verbatim of course but you get what I'm saying

I smell what you’re stepping in.

There's a dude with a tin tiller, a modified cooler to hold fish, two rods, and a three-tray hip-roof tackle box.  He shows up to local opens and is quietly massing a retirement fund from all the donations he receives from others that enter these contests.  He's the best I know.

Over here, they would have simply passed a “no tiller” rule after he won a couple and carried on fishing without him ? True.

He doesn't even have a trolling motor, lol.  Spends most of the day in reverse, standing in the stern, with his foot on the tiller.

That alone would have got him disqualified immediately for fishing while the gas engine is running. He wouldn’t win a penny here. Our tourney guys know all the tricks to shut down old men in tin boats from making them look bad ?

The "big motor" is an 8 hp Tohatsu.  These aren't big money deals, but turnout can be high.  Usually $100/team.  Pretty sure he's a trout and salmon guide and in summer, that work is non existent.  He's a genuinely nice guy, but it's fun to use him as an example in these threads.

Here he is taking our money:

I don’t think electronics has anything at all to do with it. Every angler has access to them, it’s not an advantage unless one competitor can use them and the other can’t

Absolutely does!

How good do you think Buck Perry would have been with today's electronics?

Another false argument is money won, anglers today can win more in a single event than the could in a year.

To me the ultimate test was the Megabucks series!

Under a Megabucks format the lake was divided into 12 sections, each angler starts in a section & then they rotate through sections until each angler fished all 12 sections. Try fishing behind KVD, Clunn, Roland Martin, Gary Klein, Denny Brauer & others.

Larry Nixon was the first to $1,000,000 with 4 Megabucks wins, a feat not even KVD or Clunn accomplished, they never won one.

Well if buck perry could use today’s electronics, so could the other people he fished against. That’s all I’m sayin

A different way to look at, take the electronics away & see who is still standing.

Clunn won Megabucks once, plus had a 2nd and 3rd place showing in two others.

“Jordan lee would never win without a 250 horsepower “ is the equivalent of the electronics argument

You correct, after Nixon's last both Clunn & KVD have once.

Out of 15 entries Nixon won 4, 2nd, 4th, & 9th.

KVD never won Megabucks but did have a few Top 10s in the event.

There are actually some pretty staggering stats for all the top guys when you really look at them closely.

What are head to head numbers?  Most of the rest is noise to me....but then I tend to try avoid LeBron/Jordan conversations

Thought KVD won one of the last ones.

I'm having difficulty pulling up all the results.

If one considers the floormat of a Megabucks & the field of competitors it's an amazing tournament.

Part of my reason for going with Roland is sentimental.  He was my fishing hero growing up.  I don't know who follows hockey here, but I would compare the Roland Martin vs KVD debate to be like Bobby Orr vs Wayne Gretzky.  Gretzky put up phenomenal numbers, but Bobby Orr changed how hockey was played.  In my opinion a big part of the reason professional tournament fishing is even a "thing" now is because of Martin.

I concede. The greatest of all time is Rick Clunn..or Larry Nixon...or Basil Bacon....or the salmon guide guy with the tiller. But not KVD because he had role models and better electronics. He's really not very good.

One of the reasons the debates over "all time greatest" in any sport usually doesn't amount to much is because everyone has their reasons for why they think the way they do and they get upset when someone disagrees with them. There is no right or wrong and everyone has made valid points. At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things because it is all opinions and nothing more.

There doesn't have to be a greatest ever, but there are certainly a lot of great ones, I think everyone would agree on that.

Yeah maybe but I realized that I started an opinion based thread and spent my time trying to convince people there opinion was wrong...stupid of me. My thought process is KVD is the winningest angler in B.A.S.S history which in my mind is the premier tournament league so that's why I feel he is the best. Larry Nixon and Rick Clunn are also exceptional anglers both have been extremely successful so I get the argument for both.

Kevin has also beaten clunn, Klein, and Nixon I’m sure. It’s like when Kevin Durant hits a late shot in two different NBA finals to beat Lebron, everyone says lebron is better??? It’s just a “who is your favorite” type thing
