4-8" headed here tonight. Should be double that by you when it gains moisture from the big pond.

Thankfully the worst is supposed to stay Grand Rapids and to the south. We’re only looking at 1-3” here. SW Michigan last I looked is looking at upwards of a foot of snow.

Well, we only got 2-3" here on Saturday. Easy for the 4WD to plow through.

It was pure powder.  I didn't even use a shovel, I used a broom to get rid of that white dust on the front steps.

Seasonal temps this week but another thaw coming by the weekend.  Still waiting for that "arctic slap" of air they predicted a couple weeks ago...

Shhhh... don't let Gaia know that She's falling down on the job...knowing Her, She'd hit us with 2-weeks of never getting above zero.

That’s the difference between 33* and 15*! Doesn’t seem like much in the grand scheme thing of things but that little bit of temps makes a huge difference!

33* is indian summer in late January.

It's kinda late for New England but out temps are starting to plummet. Let's just say, I'm not missing the spawn. ?

I’m looking forward to green again. 82 days doesn’t seem too far away. The past couple years I’ve been 2-3 weeks ahead of you though. ?

That's OK my friend ~

The extra week or two is often well worth the wait . . .

Looking back over things I had ice out here last year around March 6th...that's 37 days from now. It looked like that may happen again until recently...next few weeks look very cold. Guess only time will tell.

I always want open water ASAP here.

Ice out early April here is considered sort of early & pretty rare.

But I've had some truly epic April trips so I keep the dream alive.

Either way, May's not to shabby either.

Only reason I'd have for early-mid April ice-out is to test this year's mods on the canoe. Bass season doesn't open until May 8 - and that's my countdown date.

Don’t you have other stuff to chase until May? Up here, I’ve been out as early as the first of April, and our bass season doesn’t open until the third Saturday in June. Sure doesn’t stop me from spending a TON of time on the water though.

Panfish season never closes here but that’s it. All the game fish have at least a partially closed season to protect the spawning period. There are some continuous seasons for all game fish on border waters like the river near Red Wing but inland waters are closed from early March to May 8.

Until a few years ago, bass season didn’t actually open until the Saturday of Memorial Day holiday. Now it opens when the other major seasons open for catch and release on May 8. Muskie season opens in June.

Ice out usually happens the first half of April in the southern portion of the state and closer to May in the north.

You learn to live with closed seasons living here. We have some of the best fisheries in the country and endless miles of lake and river that are managed pretty well. More people own a boat in MN per capital than any other state too.

Crappie, sunnies, perch, bullheads, channel cats, rock bass, white bass.

Muskie season closed Dec 1 - doesn't open until June

LMB, SMB, Walleye, Northern closes Feb 28 - opens May 8 this year

Lake Trout closes March 31 - opens May 8.

When I lived in Bemidji, mom asked me to target rock bass...she liked the taste.

Rock bass are like the ugly distant loser cousin of the bass family.  No one really wants to associate with them.  They're an embarrassment to the bass family!

10" of snow forecast on this side of the big pond tonight. I think ice out will be early to mid March based on this winters weather.

That mess is going to pass well south of me - which never happens.

I'll take it though.

Two tenths of an inch is in the forecast for us so it must be south of me too.

I feel like this winter is going fast compared to previous ones. Despite the forecasted winter-ness coming, I feel in a rush to get all my downtime tasks complete before soft water returns.

It sure does seem like it’s going by fast!
