Super User Boomstick Posted December 2, 2020 Super User Posted December 2, 2020 Hey guys, So I bought the kids fish finders for Christmas this year. One of them has a Kaku Voodoo, so his setup will be in a self contained YakAttack CellBlock, easy enough. The other has a kayak and come spring, we'll be installing the fish finder. What trick does everyone use to secure a battery in the hull so it doesn't slide around? That's the only thing I don't know how to do Quote

diehardbassfishing Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Super glue not very super in some applications. It's brittle. If glue only option, epoxy probably much better. Clean the plastic hull area with a strong detergent (or better yet cigarette lighter fluid), and alcohol. Karl There are industrial strength adhesive back velcro straps that I have used - Home Depot stuff. It's quite good. 2 1 Quote

diehardbassfishing Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Clean the surface same as mentioned with gluing. A little pull test once set up with the battery will tell you what to expect for security with the mount. Karl Quote
Dens228 Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 They have adhesive backing......no need for superglue. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 2, 2020 Super User Posted December 2, 2020 I used marine goop to glue packing Styrofoam pieces inside the hull to make a sort of tray that the battery sets in and doesn't slide around 4 Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 2, 2020 Super User Posted December 2, 2020 I put the battery in a battery box, a semi-waterproof latched plastic box. I cut holes for cables. It's held in place by those cables attached to the finder. I use the same battery, finder, and transducer on my float tube too, so the whole deal is portable. Oh yes, the battery is a tiny compact job made by Nocqua. Probably the single greatest upgrade I made to my portable boats. Went from a 5lb brick to a little thing weighing less than a lb. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 2, 2020 Super User Posted December 2, 2020 I don't do anything fancy. I keep mine in a dry bag wedged under the seat. This has worked for almost a decade. I can try to remember to show you in the Zoom call this weekend if you want. 1 Quote

I think I might still want to put it inside the hull for the sole reason that I'm going to have a bit of excess transducer cable to do something with. I mean they do have a mount on the bottom and have a hole to run the wire up which comes up right before the hull hatch. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 3, 2020 Super User Posted December 3, 2020 The dry bag may still work for you then. I use a 5L size, and there's room for extra cord. I'll get it ready to show you. I have a new laptop, with a better camera this time around. 1 Quote

I was thinking I could do something with a dry bag once I read your post, and I even have one. I'll probably want to secure it so he can still store rods in the bull as well somehow. I look forward to seeing your setup. Quote

I'd want something more secure and durable than Velcro. My battery is in a DIY ammo box thing strapped behind my stadium seat. Has a few contacts and USB ports too. 3 Quote
Bass Junke Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 A water resistant battery box and a couple of strips of velcro. Hasn't moved in 2 years. I have forgotten to remove it from my hull a couple of times it, didn't come off the velcro even when I tilted my kayak back onto the roof. 1 Quote
Boulderman Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Battery in a small Pelican box with 12v plug. I use a nite-ize gear tie to quickly secure the pelican handle to my Hobie sail tube in the front hatch. Don't know if his kayak has anything like that to attach to. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 I use Velcro in my kayak and bass raider. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 13, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 13, 2020 I built the ammo can power box that I just set inside my dry storage and remove between trips. It doesn't move around while fishing and I can run my depthfinder off it, charge my GoPro batteries, and my phone at the same time. 1 Quote

I thought the foam was glued together or formed in such a way that it would be secure in the hull without fastening it down. Interesting that the Velcro works well for people. Cool to know. I'm for non-permanent solutions though, but if I had to use one of these methods Velcro would be more to my liking than glue. Easier to remove later. Arranging stuff in a fishing yak is quite a puzzle for sure. Quote
Matthew Pye Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Imo it's a bad idea. You want something removable that won't damage the hull. Quote

I do this, using BatteryTender disconnects and velcro the box inside the hull. I used 3M Super77 spray adhesive to help the velcro stick to the plastic hull. I remove the box and plug it into the BatteryTender to charge. Quote
