Budget frogging setup 2021 season

Looking for a budget frogging setup during this years Black Friday deals.  The last couple years I have purchased a couple dobyns rods and was pleased with their craftsmanship.  This year I am looking for a 6’6’ frogging rod under $120.  I bank fish mostly so looking for something short that I can work easily.  I already have a med hvy rod so looking for a hvy.  Also I’m deciding between another daiwa tatula ct or an slx for my reel. What say you guys ?  Sell me on something.

It may be a little difficult to find a heavy action rod under 6'8 and under your price point.  I'll look and see what I can find.  I know megabass makes several shorter heavy action rods that would fit your needs but they blow the budget up. Lol. Gonna have to look around at the 99.00 price point and see what heavy rods are out there in that length.    

Dobyns Fury has a 6'6 heavy.  I havent heard any bad thing about the furys.  Dobyns makes good stuff. I have an Xtreme 744

They are 119.00.  May catch them on sale but I dont know.  They are a best seller at TW

If you have a positive view of Fury rods, get the 6'6" Heavy. I'm sure you'll find a sale or promotion on one somewhere next week.

Problem is, the 664 isn't what I call a 'true' heavy...it's lure rating is what most others call a MH - only goes to 1oz max lure. Ya, frogs are lighter than that, but I want that extra 'oomph' to pull the bass out of the cabbage. Would be great for short-rod fans if Gary made a 5 power in 6'6" lengths.

 

Closest I can find is a Diawa Fuego - 6'9" H/F (1/4 to 1-1/2oz)

I was looking at some 13 fishing rods.  Is that really a step down from dobyns ?

I have a feeling finding a 6'6" HF at any price range is going to be a tough find.  I have an older Cabela's XMLTiC 66JW which is a 6'6" MH rated 3/8-2 oz.  12-25 lb. line with plastic still on the handle.  I don't know if you could talk me into selling it as I hate parting with any rod or reel once in my possession.  I prefer the newer model I bought at the same time with the normal MH rating of 1/4-1 oz.  Tip is definitely a larger diameter on the older model.  These were purchased several years ago.

 

It didn't take me long to prefer longer casting rods.  Still prefer shorter spinning rods.

Muse Black rods are good but that's over budget. No experience with lesser price point rods from them.

That's frustrating then. I had heard that Fury rods seem to be closer to one power level below how they are marked. Seems that's true in this case.

Funny thing is - there's a difference between spinning and casting rods

Fury 703SF is marked as a Medium

Fury 703C is marked as a Medium-Heavy

 

Same power number - two different word-ratings...this is why I look at the numbers instead of the words.

Hmm...

 

Unfortunately this is not a mainstream length/power combination so choice will be limited. Good candidate for a custom rod, but good luck getting one for less than $120 with out building it yourself.

 

I'm literally building a 6'6" H rod right this moment, lol.

The only reason I want the 6’6’ is because it’s so hard to work too water frogs with longer rods on the bank. Maybe I just suck lolol

I really think a 7 foot rod would be the best option.  I think u can modify how you are working the frog from the bank to work for you.

No, I get it. I hated 7' or longer rods from shore, it's a huge hassle and there are a lot of casts you can't make because of trees/bushes.

I would be looking for a Mag. Heavy from Dobyns for frogging ideally. The Fury Heavy is really a MH by most standards

Ya, and the only Mag-Heavy in the Fury line is 7'3"

Tatula Elite 6’9” heavy is 180 retail. If you wait this week you can definitely find it 25 to 30% off which hits your budget. 
 

There are a couple really good Megabass rods which meet your size criteria in the xxx orochi line if you can grab them used. 
 

I’m bank or kayak fishing and trust me I know it’s a struggle. I’m only 5’10 but I have a MB wild bunch I frog with and I’ve learned to deal with the length. If you can get something 7 foot and force yourself it opens a lot of JDM options on heavy rods you can’t buy otherwise.

About to take advantage of bjs k Friday and get the 6’6” dobyns fury heavy for my frog rod.  I know everyone says it’s more like a med heavy but I already have a fury med heavy.  Is this a dumb move ?  I want the 6’6” length and this rod is the best I can find

Ya - the Dobyns rods are actually one step in power below the words

Dobyns Heavy = Diawa or St. Croix Medium-Heavy

 

For a frogging rod, I'd want a 5 power from Dobyns.

But if I fish up north in sparser cover can’t I really get away with a 4 power though ?

Since you don't have your location showing, I don't know where 'up north' is to you. I'm in Minnesota and my pitch/flip/frog rod is a Diawa heavy - equal to a 5-power Dobyns. Since I toss frogs into lily pads, I want that power to haul them out - using heavy braid to cut the lily pad stalks if need-be.

Give you an idea of where I frog in addition to flipping and pitching. Satellite shot of the bay I usually work.

Boat launch is bottom center, the light green area starting just to the east of that and going up almost to the top...that is one single lily-pad patch. Look at the scale...this thing is huge for up here. I run my canoe through that, tossing frogs across the top or punching down underneath that 'mess'.

 

Being further south, I doubt that you DON'T have areas like this.

 

If you plan on fishing something like this. 5-power Dobyns or a heavy St Croix/Diawa.

I’ve been going around and around the last week or so looking for a new frog rod. The last few days there has been a few threads about them that you guys were posting about and now this. 
 

Don’t know about anyone else, but you convinced me.

I just ordered the Siera Mag Heavy.
