sideways2 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Hey people!! I would appreciate some help picking out some lures for pike. After a long hiatus I'll be back at it in the spring. I went looking around locally the other day and although I recognize a few items, there are alot of things I just couldn't find anymore especially some spoons that I used back in the day. So if anyone has their favourite lure of choice I would appreciate hearing about it!! Thanks!! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 19, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 19, 2020 Find your most expensive, favorite bait in your box. Pike will be all over it. Spinnerbaits and inline spinners are good options, along with the old standby casting spoon. 5 5 Quote
Michigander Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 They like flashy and hairy lures. They also like your favorite bass lures. Especially when you have a lighter pound test leader attached. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 I have honestly never caught anything let alone a pike on an inline spinner lol!! Quote
Super User gim Posted November 19, 2020 Super User Posted November 19, 2020 Anything with some flash and or vibration should work pretty well. In fact, even if your target is another species like bass, you’ll probably catch pike too. There’s lots of days where I literally can’t avoid them. 1 Quote

Michigander Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I catch a lot of pike on light colored jigs too. White, cream, tan colors when working through deeper water. 1 Quote
Vilas15 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Big rapala husky jerks (4 or 5") in reflective colors Quote
Michigander Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 The Reaction Strike suspender is a phenomenal pike lure. I couldn't tell you how many pike I've caught with mine. It's only about 6" long from tip to tip but I've never even had a bass follow it. I think they are discontinued but there's still a few on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/c/1430143835 Quote

Going to have to look closer at those!! 22 minutes ago, J Francho said: This is literally all you need to know. Finessegenics Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 1. A spoon of any color works well, though one in the 5 of diamonds pattern or red and white are classics. 2. A spinnerbait. It’s also my absolute favorite to use when targeting pike, the hits are electric. If you’re going to be using a wire leader, take a look at the Booyah Pikee. The eye of the spinnerbait has a closed loop (compared the R bend in other spinnerbaits) so that your snap can easily clip on and not slide up and down. 3. A soft plastic jerkbait. I’m not sure why it works so well but I can’t even count the amount of pike I’ve caught on one. It’s also something different so I figured I’d suggest it, as a spoon and spinnerbait are probably the most popular. Also, if you’re going to be targeting pike, make sure you are using a heavy fluoro leader or a wire leader. Their teeth will easily cut through mono or lighter braids. It sucks when they swim away with your lure but it happens quite often. I’d also invest in a good pair of long needle nose pliers. You don’t want your fingers anywhere near their mouth when you’re unhooking them. Good luck! 1 Quote
sideways2 Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 Thanks!! Gotcha on the spoons and leaders... Going to have to look at plastics and spinnerbaits... Quote
Michigander Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I catch way more pike on heavy FC leaders than steel leaders. 1 Quote

This summer I tied on a brand new swim jig with a brand new menace grub trailer...about 5 casts in pike cut me off. Last month I was throwing a $6 shad rap ...nada...tie on a $10 frittside and get a pike almost instantly. Luckily that one didn't cut me off. Quote

moguy1973 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 We caught them on big 6" Doctor Spoons and big Storm GT360 swimbaits when we were in Canada last year. They would hit our bottom bouncers with spinners and crawlers and crawler tipped jigs when we were fishing for walleye too. Caught few on big walk the dog and plopper type baits up on top too. Quote

ABart61 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Spoons: Doctor Spoon and Johnson Silver Minnow Spoons Spinnerbaits: 1/2 bass spinnerbaits and buzz baits, Bigger Mepps Cranks: Trolling or casting 4 to 5 inch stickbaits (Husky Jerks and my all time favorite Pike Lure the Smithwick Perfect 10) Plastics: Larger Flukes and swimbaits. Pro tip: Longer Needle Nose Pliers. Playing with fire sticking your hands down their mouths. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 19, 2020 Super User Posted November 19, 2020 If you dropped your 11" pike pliers in the lake, do they become cover or structure? Asking for a friend. 2 3 Quote

sideways2 Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 Thanks guys!! I really appreciate the input!! Other than the common spoons and half waves I was a little out of my element when I went looking at the local and all the "new to me" stuff hanging there LOL!! Back in the day my box was loaded with DAM Effzett's... those things were amazing up here!! They are non existent locally today. Quote

Michigander Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 A lot of guys use needlenose pliers but I actually prefer the old style hook remover because you can push the hook down and out a lot easier. Pike jaws are much harder than a bass' and can take some directed force to pop a hook free. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Baker_Original_Hookout_Hook_Remover_/descpage-BKRORHO.html?from=gshop&gclid=CjwKCAiA7939BRBMEiwA-hX5J19diAAfl8Jogcx5qhyT5WGqhbTeTHLkIDBNi2xL1WhxNZDyFHnvJBoC4psQAvD_BwE And they aren't expensive, so that's quite nice.
