I have 1 of my extra spinning spools filled with braid from the 90’s. I have no clue of the brand or pound test.
So what’s a good braid for spinning for say dropshot to get started with?

thanks?

I'm partial to Smackdown personally. I like the Flame Green on my spinning reels so I can watch my line.

P-Line TCB in #12, yellow/green.  It's very affordable and i've been using it for three years now without any problems.  It casts well, holds knots well and isn't noisy through the guides.  I'm not a P-LIne fan except this product. Good luck!

Spiderwire smooth 8 does everything I want for finesse spinning stuff, I've tried a huge number of braids over the years and it has a good combination of strength and handling. My two most used spinning outfits have got 0.10mm and 0.12mm on them that has been on for 4 seasons and it's still flawless. It's inexpensive too, so that's a bonus. I have Sufix 131 on another spinning rod, and it's very nice, but I don't see an advantage over smooth 8, especially at 3-4x the price. The trouble with recommending it is that it is sold in Europe with the diameters I've stated, though the lastest batches seem to have changed the diameters! The US labeling will be totally different. Goodness knows what line manufacturers are thinking. If you get 10-15lb US rated smooth 8 I expect you'll be using the same stuff I'm talking about though.

I've really liked the Suffix 832 on my spinning reels.  I think I have either 8 or 10 lb on them right now

I'll have to try Spiderwire Smooth 8.  From what I've tried, some off-brand, Tough Line, Power Pro, Suffix, and Hitena Pureline, the Hitena is my fav, does everything well, very small diameter.  Pricey, but like all Hitena products, first class.  I use 21 for bones and barracuda + SMB/walleyes during the summer.  I have a spool of lighter I have not tried yet, but the 21 acts like most 10's for casting distance.

I have been using Sunline Xplasma 16lb on my spinning gear this year and so far so good.  I haven't had any issues other than it loosing some of the color.  I use a leader anyway so no big deal.   I have liked it better than Sufix 832 and Power Pro but its about equal to Seaguar Smackdown.

Kastking Superpower braid. I have used it for three seasons and have had no issues. I like green or gray colors

I’ve switched everything I had from regular Power Pro to Power Pro Super Slick.  The super slick is a lot softer and is more manageable especially at higher test strengths.

I like regular PowerPro. But I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with YoZuri super braid. It casts well and I’vehad no issues whatsoever with it. I have 15lb test on one of my spinning reels. I’d buy more if I had the opportunity.

I have 20lb suffix. 832 on my spinning set up with 6lb leader. I have found that the higher pound test does not get wind knots as much and it's easier for me to work with.

I also use 30lb kastking superpower 4 carrier braid on a baitcasting set up that I like too.

Power pro is another good brand.

I've used Sufix Performance and 832, regular PowerPro, Daiwa Samurai and Berkley Fireline.  Original PowerPro is quite noisy through the guides.  May quiet with some use, but haven't used it much yet.  Fireline flaked off like crazy when spooling it.  New it is a harder line.  Don't know how much it will soften with use.  It is on a MH spinning rod which has seen very little use since I prefer a baitcast reel for any lure it can handle. The Daiwa and Sufix are soft lines.  Performance loses color fast, but that doesn't affect performance.

My Florida fishing buddy uses nothing but original PowerPro 40# on his spinning reels.  I don't hear it when he is retrieving and I am about 10' from him in the boat.

I've recently put some Fins on a spinning reel and a couple casting reels.  So far I like it.  Quiet.  Soft.  Several colors are available.  I have 5# yellow Windtamer on a spinning reel (for Ned Rigs, but will go heavier when re-spooled).  Yellow 60# Original PRT on the reel for my frog rod and blue 45# 40G on another casting reel.

I really like Neon Tangerine Siege so when I found a spool of 10# Sufix Performance Fuse in Fluorescent Neon Fire at Ollie's I had to get it.  Only been out with it once so no opinion yet about it.  It is on a Pixy.

Not to sound like a total cheapskate but do you fill the reel with braid or only use like 50 yards with a mono backer?

I don’t know anyone who fills a whole spool with braid. I use cheap/old mono backing and put on about 50-60 yards of braid on most my outfits.

Edit: That 50-60 is an estimate, but on my absolute longest of casts, I still have braid left on my spool. However, I can tell I’m getting close to the backing.

I love TCB for light spinning gear.  That line has a tendency to get ropey faster then any other braid ive used.  Its also the only braid ive ever broken when cinching down a connection knot on brand new line.  If you use any more then 6 or 7 twists with an Alberto it can really damage the line.  Don't get me wrong I really like it a lot, it casts well especially before the teflone coating wears away.  Just be careful with it if you choose to use it, if it looks frayed, flip the spool to the unused side.

If moneys no object check out Gosen, it might be the best superline on the planet.  Hitenna Silky is excellent for spinning gear, it also comes in pink which looks awesome on Tatula LTs or any other reel for that matter.  If you want to get one that easier to find and not as much $ but still a great braid, X5 or X9 by Berkley is great.  I like the X5 for casting gear and the X9 for spinning gear.

I use PowerPro, in light green ( Super Slick) or high vis yellow. Us old guys have a hard time using green or timber to see the line move. I use a floro leader, about three turns on the spool for my leader. PowerPro is 10#, leader 6-8#.

The later.  I back with a cheap mono.  Don't measure how much, but about half the spool is braid...so a little over 60 yds. since most of my reels hold in the 125-135 yard range and I fill to the spool lip.  Plus it is the larger diameter part of the spool getting the braid.

I put about 1.5 casts worth of braid over backing. Original PP, PP Super Slick V2, or 832 in 8 or 10lb will get you going great. All pretty reasonably priced, and very good lines.
