Jermination Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 iphone users out there, be careful sending "live" photos of your catches to your friends. Not sure if you guys are aware but you can look at additional info of live pics and it shows gps coordinates and a map of where the pic was taken. Not a big deal for tourney pics, but all the catch, photo, release guys beware! Or use it to your advantage and go through your buddies pics and see if they sent you any "live" ones The ones below are mine, that one of my regular partners i fish with let me know to look out for before he takes my spots LOL fish on! Super User J Francho Posted October 12, 2020 Super User Posted October 12, 2020 You can also get GPS from EXIF metadata on many formats, including jpeg. 3 Quote

Bass Rutten Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 Location is recorded even if it's not a live photo. I never ever have my location services on unless I'm using an app that needs gps location like maps. To much battery drain, too little privacy. 3 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted October 12, 2020 Super User Posted October 12, 2020 That GPS data is less important to other anglers than the data in your selfie posing with your matching Gucci slippers and purse. 1 2 Quote
Nelson Wormefeller Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 Just take a screenshot and post that 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted October 12, 2020 Super User Posted October 12, 2020 I was surprised a how many people find information on pictures. I emailed a friend some pictures of bass and salt water fish I caught this summer. He managed to find the date of the pictures and accused me of lying showing him pictures that were taken a few years ago. Laugh was on him, because I never set the date on my camera. All my pictures dates, were from when I bought the camera. Now I set the date on my camera so no one thinks I'm lying. I took a screen shot on my fish finder showing a tree with fish on it, and another friend thanked me for the GPS numbers. I hadn't noticed that the GPS numbers. were on the screen shot. I would never notice such things. I just look at a picture of fish and think nice fish. Quote

Yes but...this is important for any of you who have children at home. I'd tell your kids not to take selfies in the house or anywhere else they frequent often. Lot's of creeps out there. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 Fyi you can disable geotagging in photos on iPhone completely, go into settings->privacy->location services->camera... then select “never“ 1 Quote

One of the features of phones is that geo data is not included when location services are off. I actually do some digital forensics work for an attorney friend of mine. Just last week I was trying to locate a mother who kidnapped her daughter from her ex. Quote
Jermination Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 Yeah I knew it was a thing but after pulling up on one of my spots that I havent seen another boat fish in probably 5 years and it happened to be a friend i send pictures to I knew something was up LOL 2 Quote
Smokinal Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 So how would one pull this data from a pic; if one was so bold to do so ? Asking for a friend 1 1 Quote

Asking for a friend Just upload the file to a site like this. There are tons of options out there. If you use Chrome or Firefox, there are extensions for that (and just about everything else). Quote
Super User Spankey Posted October 13, 2020 Super User Posted October 13, 2020 Beware of the trolls. Plenty here. The regulars here are not. Y’all have the ability to find fish. Have the ability to find and make something work to catch them. A lot don’t. I‘ve seen the trolling take another bass site down. That site was full of good bass fisherman. Had get togethers at various locations. So you got to know each other if you wanted to. If you are into catch, photo and release. And you start flaunting pics around. Not too surprising some dude that never has been seen before is in your honey hole. I hate to be negative but it happens. Public water. But they are leaching off of your photos. So that nice photo of your 18”, 4 lb. bass, with carbon pattern Rapala jerkbait hanging from it lower jaw, pic taken off your boat deck on the water, with a pink and white vacation cottage with a flag on the dock along the shore at Lake TimBuckTo makes that spot somewhat easy to find for some leach. But it happens. Your hard work made it easy for someone. This is not the same as being helpful and informative to people who are trying to learn or get better. But I believe there are guys who feed off of some pics. Maybe I’m wrong. Sorry for being negative, I seriously don’t live to be like that. Especially when it comes to bass fishing. Quote

I agree! #1) mining people’s fish photos for location data has to seriously mess up your fish karma #2) if that is someone’s strategy for finding good spots, that’s a person you don’t have to worry about catching “your fish” because they will forever be one step behind you 1 Quote

They called a spade a spade. I had to agree with them. Overall picture of that site was smaller. Here the guys are spread out quite a bit more. There a guys out there, local to you but on here often following you to a degree. For the most part it doesn’t mean cat crap. Just trying to get an edge. I’m hypothetically speaking. But you are a very proficient angler. And possibly some other body local could follow your content and try to better himself. They still have to catch the fish. A lot of them can’t catch a cold if truth be known. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted October 13, 2020 Super User Posted October 13, 2020 I've never seen a website that you can post photos to that does not remove location data from the photos before putting them online. I'm not saying they don't exist but I'm not aware of one. Texting a photo to some one definitely includes the location where the photo was taken unless you take steps to prevent it. Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 13, 2020 Super User Posted October 13, 2020 Frankly, I don't care if someone knows my favorite spots or not. In fact, I share them with anyone who asks. If they ask what I'm catching bass on I'll tell them that, too. In my opinion it seems rather silly to keep that information top secret. I want people to enjoy their time on the water as much as I enjoy mine. It's also a great way to make new friends out there. 3 Quote
