Where do you guys shop for a fish finder? I'm trying to avoid eBay, though. Thank you in advance!

If you can find any in stock at a retail store, go look at them, ask questions, and play around with them to see which one you like the most.

What do you have if you don't mind my asking?

Right now it's just a basic Lowrance Hook2-4...I am looking to upgrade to a Reveal - either 5 or 7. Not much room in the canoe for a large unit.

I've used hodges marine and GPS store with good results in the past.

I ordered mine straight from Lowrance cause they had a rebate going on the site.

I got my Lowrance Hook2 7x from Bass Pro online (I was not in the mood to drive an hour each way).  They have 2 day shipping at no extra cost so it made sense for me.  Also they have a 60 day no questions asked return policy.  I used the unit this weekend (with Tripleshot SI) and it worked great.  I am ordering a BerleyPro sun visor for it.  The morning sun was a killer when coming across your back or side.

Right now, pretty much whatever reputable place has the one you want in stock. I got mine on sale at BPS online.

Today I bought a stereo for my van, got the receiver from Walmart, the installation kit from Amazon. Crutchfield was out of stock.

Have you experienced any issues with it reading while moving?  I need to replace both of mine, and was thinking the Hook2 tripleshot is a great lower price option.  But, I've also heard they often struggle when going more than like 10MPH and were useless from then on.

You can buy most of them from common sites such as Amazon, Cabela's Bass Pro Shops, and even Tackle Warehouse - although I am not gonna lie if you are trying to avoid ebay, I wouldn't touch Amazon either (there might be some sellers on ebay or Amazon I have bought from and if I knew what you were looking for I could provide the names).

I bought my Garmin EchoMap UHD 93sv from DelawarePaddlesports.com which is where I bought my Bonafide SS127 from, they are a tax free state as well.

If you haven't already done so, if you can make it to a BPS or Cabela's you can toy around with the demo models and see which ones you really like. That's largely how I settled on a Garmin, they were just so easy to use and everything made sense.

Got my two Garmin's from BPS.  They were both on sale.  Ended up saving around $300.

Bought my Garmin Striker Plus 5CV from Academy Sports online. No problems with the order or the delivery. It was delivered in 5 days from the order date, which was June 26th. I am very happy with the Garmin by the way.

That’s what I just ordered, and I can’t wait to get it! Based on my little research, Garmin appears the most user friendly which is exactly what the doctor ordered!

ps: you must be a Pink Floyd fan

Hey Eddie 101, funny you said I must be a Pink Floyd fan! I can only think it is because of my screen name. I am a guitar player of over 50 years, and I do like Pink Floyd. The Dminor9 just happens to be one of my favorite chords in one of my favorite keys.

You won't be disappointed with the Garmin Striker Plus 5CV. It is very user friendly. It is the first fish finder I have owned and is very easy to navigate and use. I was a little concerned with the screen size, as most think you need a 7" screen or larger. But I disagree. The 5" screen is very easy to read. I am 66 years old and have to use reading glasses, but even without them, I have no problem seeing and interpreting the screen. One thing I haven't had the time to invest in yet is the contour mapping feature. Although I have played around with it. The mapping is pretty cool also. Enjoy your new purchase!

I knew it! You sound like a Jazz/Fusion guy rather than a blues guy. I'm a player as well, and have been playing for about 40 years myself. I'm not good as I should, however. IOW, I still suck for a lack of better term. Incidentally, my favorite chords are E7 and Em7 and my favorite player is a guy named Robben Ford.

Btw, this is what I just bought and I'm super excited!

Best,

Ed

I was in West Marine yesterday and I have to agree with the 5" screen being readable.  I used to use a small handheld GPS on the Pacific coming and going out the gate.  I actually was thinking to myself that I should just go back to using the smaller units.  I don't want to clutter my dash area on the boat I'm refurbing. Eddie 101, you got the deluxe Garmin! Good for you. Those models are a bit out of my price range. I know you will be happy with it. If you have questions and don't know how to do stuff with it, there are manuals available on the internet and YouTube has tons of video instructions to help.

You are correct on the Jazz/Fusion genre. There are so many great musicians out there, hard to pick a favorite.

Guitarfish, guess we are just a bunch of "Fishin-Musicians" !

Let we forget, late great Duane Allman was a bass fisher too!
