HopDevvil814 Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Hello All, I'm looking to make a new setup for fishing on my kayak. Currently I have a spinning setup and would like to get a casting all purpose setup, until I get some more setups. I just picked up an Okuma TCS-C-691MH Scott Martin Signature TCS Casting Rod. Since I want this to be an all purpose setup I am not sure what gear ratio to get. I am kind of thinking a 7:3:1 might do the job, but want to see what you guys think. Also what kind of line should I run? Thanks Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 28, 2020 Super User Posted July 28, 2020 That's an awesome all purpose rod for kayak bassin'. I have one, and love it. I'm using a slightly slower reel, but a 7:1 willwork fine. 12-15# fluoro or copolymer would be your best all purpose bet for that rig. 2 Quote
HopDevvil814 Posted July 29, 2020 Author Posted July 29, 2020 Thanks for the feedback! Maybe I'll go with something slower, either way should be good. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 29, 2020 Super User Posted July 29, 2020 to the forum. If you've been following threads for the past week or so, then you know the Quantum Icon ($120 reel) has been discontinued and can be found at great prices. You would also have read that this reel has features not found on more popular reels until reaching the $200-$250 price. Check for PhishLI posts. RH 7.0:1 (HPT) can be had for $50 and the 6.3:1 (SPT) for $45. I don't know how you can beat that deal. I am fond of 12# mono or co-polymer. Many good choices. 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 I am biased since I use all fast reels for my style fishing (8.0+). If I was in a kayak I go with faster back, faster back out. Quote
HopDevvil814 Posted July 30, 2020 Author Posted July 30, 2020 @new2BC4bass I haven't seen his post yet, but I will be looking now! Thanks for the heads up. @OnthePotomac My next setups I am going to go with something faster for sure. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 30, 2020 Super User Posted July 30, 2020 Read PhishLI posts. Quote from GReb, "The Icon PT at $45 on eBay is best deal going in fishing." and "It’s just a solid reel for the money. Aluminum frame, quality drag, good brakes, smooth, powerful, and comfortable. Only downside is it weighs almost 8 ounces out of the box. But it fishes great" 1 Quote
HopDevvil814 Posted July 31, 2020 Author Posted July 31, 2020 @new2BC4bass Thank you for the replies. I pulled the trigger on a HPT, can't wait to try it out. I appreciate the help. Quote
HopDevvil814 Posted July 31, 2020 Author Posted July 31, 2020 Any of you guys have suggestions like this for a 8.0+ reel? Quote

Fuego CT-XS - 8.1:1, aluminum frame, Magforce-Z braking system. I have one that I use for flip/pitch/punch/frogs and larger topwaters (WP-110, Super Spook, etc) 1 Quote
