Dobyns Champion 733

I’d like to see if anybody that owns this rod has used it for crankbaits. I’d be doing shallow water cranking (around 5 feet of water)  I have this rod and would like to throw Strike King KVD 1.5s on it but not sure if it would work well  (like if I would just be ripping the trebles right out of their mouths) Any input is appreciated!

It's not optimal because it's a bit faster action but as a 3 Power it will work for that application.

Thanks for the reply. I should’ve researched a little more before I posted. I’ve learned that if you don’t have a cranking rod using mono is best and I just don’t wanna do that. I don’t have a ton of rods so I like using fluorocarbon as I use that for more things than mono. So I think if I really wanna get into throwing than I’ll probably just get a cranking rod.

Got one of those with a Fuego CT-H (6.3:1) on it with 12# YZH. This is my crankbait rig - and the only single-technique rig I have...rest of my rigs are multi-purpose.

I have two fuego reels and I like em. Thanks for the reply. I figured out what I’m gonna do.

I didn’t like my fury 705cb at all for shallow cranking. I returned it and just use my fury 703. Great shallow crank rod. It’s also a great trap rod around grass and topwater. This rod can do a lot

I have the xp 733 & use it for squarebills. the line I use is 12# copoly & use the sweep set when hooking the fish. This rod also works well with weightless senkos.

Ive used the savvy 733 for squrebills and lipless quite a bit. Works perfect

Fluorocarbon will work fine.  Mono is suggested for rods with stiffer actions because of its stretch.  Fluorocarbon is just as stretchy.  I fished crankbaits on MF rods for quite a while before getting a dedicated crankbait rod.  Don't lock the drag down.

I have 2 powell 723's.  Their power ratings are similar to dobyns..(Gary dobyns had a part in Powell's rods)  i can say that my powell 723 will do well with sqaurebills.  It's a lighter power rod so that works in your favor and makes up for a faster action.   Cant go wrong with that rod.

Did you have to use a really stretchy line? Do you think I can get away with just using fluorocarbon?

i used 14# sniper. was fine.

Why are you so concerned about stretchy line? Just fish what you have, fluoro stretches the same if not more than mono. I fish mono and braid for everything including cranks and catch plenty of fish and I don’t even own a “cranking” rod

I just don’t wanna be ripping the hooks out. I know people will try to use a stretchier line to prevent that when they don’t have a cranking rod. He said it worked fine for him so I’m not going to. All good ?

The dobyns 703 or 733 will be fine for

cranks even if you don’t use a “stretchier” line. I have no problems pulling hooks

Just remember if you use Fluorocarbon line it tends to sink so your bait will run somewhat deeper.

another thought is to look into the 733 sierra line. i run a lot of my treble hook baits on that line of rods. slower action on those blanks compared to the champion. actually gary suggested that a lot of people use the 733 for their topwater and i figure it would do just fine for cranks too.
