jchez444 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Have a 16ft electric only bass boat no electronics and an older 24v 70lb thrust motorguide. Now I’m looking to get it set-up for tournament fishing eventually. A lot of the fishing is done in 15-25ft range, foundations, grass beds, points and other deep structures. Should I be looking for a spot lock trolling motor first or a good set of electronics (garmin 106sv or helix 10)Hey Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 In your situation I'd say electronics first. Maybe you already know where this stuff is, but your electronics are your eyes under the water. They'll help you find fish as well as new places you never knew about before. Your tm will get you by for now, but fishing deeper without electronics is tough and in my opinion a recipe for disaster if you're getting into tournament fishing. Generally you'll be donating your money...that you could be putting towards upgrades into someone else's pocket. Quote
Super User GaryH Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 Chicken or the egg. Like WI said you will definitely need electronics if your getting involved in tournament fishing. As to what kind that's a preference thing. I run helix 10 and a 12 and I think there great. Remember whatever you choose make sure it will be compatible with the trolling motor that you will upgrade to later. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 X2 on the compatibility issue. Quote
Hower08 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Electronics. Use a regular anchor if you need to hold position without touching the motor. If you really want to maximize your offshore fishing humminbird 360 is invaluable. My tourney partner has it on his boat and we have won multiple tournaments that would likely not have happened without that Quote
