MGBama Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 All, I havd seen this unit on sale at Academy sports $799. Was considering running this unit at the helm (tripple shot). I have only used birds in the past and no little about lowrance. My understanding is base model no networking or Blue tooth capabilities. Do any of you guys know much about these units. Using for bass fishing. Main concerns is the quality of GPS and how it reads in shallow water ( less than 10ft). Any info appreciated Quote
rangerjockey Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 BPS has or did have the Hook 2 9 inch triple shot with US mapping on sale for $ 499. It's last years model without fish reveal but it's a steal at that price. They may have the 12 also. I don't think they can share waypoints between units. 1 Quote
MGBama Posted July 5, 2020 Author Posted July 5, 2020 No i don't think so since no networking capabilities. I just wonder if I would regret the purchase Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 It depends on what you want from the unit. I have the smaller screen trippleshot and it does everything I expected from it. A feature that didn't influence my decision to purchase, was the ability to change the colors on the display. It makes distinguishing cover connected to the bottom from the bottom itself easy. Viewing more than two features is another plus for me as I can view traditional sonar, down and side imaging all at once. Keeps my hands free to fish instead of fiddling with the unit. The downside of the trippleshot is the size and shape of the transducer. I couldn't find a way to mount it to my TM for use on the bow. Quote

That would be a detering factor for me though if i cant mount it to tm Quote
rangerjockey Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 The split shot Transducer is much smaller and would mount on the trolling motor. Personally I can't see the advantage to side imaging on the trolling motor. Usually you need to be moving faster than I would normally run the trolling motor to get a good SI image. 1 Quote

I would agree- nit a need imo to have side scan at the TM. The smaller split shot would cover the needs at the TM. My worry is purely about quality being what is considered a lower end unit Quote
rangerjockey Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 I wouldn't worry. I have the Elite on my TM , Granted its a model up from the hook but To me Lowrance has the best 2d sonar. I've had Garmin and Humminbirds also and honestly they are all good. If I had my dream set up I'd probably run a Bird just for the mapping and Lowrance along side it on the console. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 Side scanning TD mounted on a TM only works if you don't turn the motor. Transum mounted is stable doesn't turn fast, best location. 2D in 10' of water reads about 3 1/2' diameter spot on the bottom less shallower. GPS with Navonics chip is excellent. Tom Quote
Alex from GA Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 I have a new Hook2 7" with the split shot transducer on the trolling motor and love it. I'm not using the GPS but the fish locator goes very shallow. I go in the river and it shows to 2'. The transducer is smaller than the first generation Hook and tucks behind the skeg good. Quote
