NebraskaBass Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Haven't purchased a new reel in quite some time. Very overwhelmed with all of the options out there. I need an all purpose reel for plastics, jigs, etc and then a reel for crankbaits. I am looking at the new Shimano Curado DC for the cranks but I am lost on my next choice. I am very interested in trying something from Daiwa but there are just so many options. Between the Tatula SV TW, the Tatula Extreme, and the Zillion I cannot decide if the step up in price is worth it. I am also seeing a lot of people talk about the Tatula SV TW as a light weight set up. Can this not be used for lightweight plastics as well as heavier jigs? Please let me know what you all think or if you have any other recommendations. I really appreciate any help. Thanks Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 The Curado DC is a great choice for a cranking reel, but depending on what you plan to pay for one it would be worth considering a Bantam MGL. The Bantam is a much better reel IMO. I haven't used any of the new Tatula reels so I cannot be of any help in that area. Quote
CrankFate Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 The best thing to do is go and see the reels in person. And bring the rod it’s going on. People try to help, but IMO, the reason for buy, sell, trade is because of buying things that didn’t work for what they’d be used for. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 I was given a Curado DC for my birthday. I haven’t used it much but so far I like it. I think I will buy another one. Quote

Is he going to spool it up and tie on a jig and go pitch it in the tub at BPS? 1 2 Quote
NebraskaBass Posted May 12, 2020 Author Posted May 12, 2020 I plan on heading to BassPro at some point this week. Need to pick up a couple rods as well. Just stuck on this reel choice for my plastics/jigs. There are almost too many options out there. Quote

It's excellent with light lures, and very good in windy conditions with light lures and light line. I only use mine in both extremes though. Right now it's spooled with 8lb Sufix Advance on a 7'1" MF. I'm throwing light plastics like worms and flukes, and small cranks like a Mann's 1-Minus or light jerkbaits like a Duel 90F at 6 grams. It's really great with baits in that range. After the spawn it'll go on a heavy rod with 50lb braid for pitching, skipping, and punching. Basically shorter range work. I prefer other reels for chuck 'n wind baits at 3/8oz+ and up. The DC or any upper end Shimano will be just fine here. Quote
Ogandrews Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Although it is a good reel I’d recommend going with something besides the curado dc. If you want to not spend as much, go with a regular curado k which is still an amazing reel or spend some more and get a bantam mgl which is much better than the curado dc. Another good option is the chronarch mgl, although I think it is better for lighter baits although it will do anything. If you plan on throwing bigger cranks than I would also look into a tranx 200, incredible reel that is absolutely indestructible. I’m really not sure why the tranx 200 isn’t more popular in bass fishing, it is almost exactly like a curado K only much beefier. Perfect reel for a high resistance retrieve like a deep crank or really heavy duty applications like punching/flipping/smaller swimbaits. I own multiple 300 and 400 size tranx and even those size will throw 1/4 oz jigs without issue. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 Not a Shimano guy so I can't comment on that side of things, but I'm a big fan of the SV reels. You can use it for both light weight and heavy weight baits. The "SV" is supposed to stand for "Stress-free Versatile" and that's pretty dang accurate. You basically set the brake based on your casting motion and it doesn't matter what bait you tie on, you're good to go. I'm sure the Zillion is even better yet, but I don't know if it's enough to justify the cost either. Regardless, I think you'd be pleased with the Tat SV. Quote

NebraskaBass Posted May 13, 2020 Author Posted May 13, 2020 So I switched up the plan a bit. I decided to go a different route with the cranking reel. I am now looking for just one baitcaster. This thing needs to be capable of handling light finesse jigs/worms up to heavier jigs and plastics. Basically an all around jig/plastic reel. My budget is $300-$450. I am willing to go a bit higher if it is worth the jump. Part of me wants to just grab a Chronarch MGL and run with it but this is going to be the reel I use the most and I need to know if I am missing out staying below $300. This reel will most likely end up on a loomis GLX or NRX so I would prefer something light to balance well. Any input is appreciated. Thanks! Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 I'd stay away from plastic reels for heavier jigs and baits. I use mine for lighter stuff only. Quote
swimmingjig Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 I'm really into Lew's custom lite if I have to buy a reel today. Quote

Fishingmickey Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 The Curado 70 is a fine reel IMHO and is being closed out. Tackle Warehouse has them going for 160. FM Quote

I've done it. Mostly to get a "real feel" of the reel on a rod, or a specific rod. I have a few reels and rods that together don't feel "right" in my hand. But on another rod,the reel feels good. Kinda hard to explain, I think. Comfort thing, I guess. Quote
