mheichelbech Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 As noted, am thinking about getting one of these LCRs for my jon boat to fish small trolling motor only type lakes and private lakes I can access. This LCR seems like a good cheap option for that. Wondering if anyone had used one. Reviews online seem to be a bit mixed but not sure I can trust the negatives due to possible operator error. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 11, 2020 Super User Posted May 11, 2020 I have the Hook 2-4 (non GPS) unit on my canoe. It's been pretty good with clear definition on the screen. I am looking at upgrading next year since even at the close range I'm viewing it at, the screen is a bit small. For an entry-level unit, I'd recommend it - but like me, in a year or two you might be looking for a larger screen. Pic of my Hook 2 mounted, the tablet above runs my contour-mapping app. 1 Quote

Ya - like Navonics on more expensive sonar units, the I-Boating app shows the contour lines, uses the tablet's GPS to track location, can record tracks and can even set waypoints. This is the recording of the day I caught the bass in my profile pic. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted May 11, 2020 Super User Posted May 11, 2020 This is pretty good thinking in my opinion. I've always had GPS on my units so I've never had a need to use an alternate mapping device like this, but its still a good idea. Does the tablet have issues if it gets wet? I have ipad at home but I don't use it outside in the elements. Quote

If it got dunked, it'd probably be toast, but splatters from wet lures, tail-flipping bass and such don't bother it none...just have to clean the screen. Nice thing is that it has 16gb main memory and will take up to a 256gb micro-SD card - I have a 128gb card in it now. So I got room for maps, my music and lots of other things. 1 Quote

What about fishing in the rain? Do you think it would hold up for a few hours in a good rain? Quote

I'd put it in one of those waterproof bags...there are some that allow you to use the touchscreen through them. Quote

I don’t know about for IPads b for my IPhone I use a Lifeproof case. They are waterproof and I believe offer a 1 year guarantee on the phone if it gets wet while in the case. Also, I had used mine for about 4 years and basically wore the case out...they sent me another case for just the cost of shipping. Best case you can buy IMHO. Quote
kwassing Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 I would go with at least the 5". They are currently getting rid of the hook2 so you can find them on clearance, IF you can find em. Quote
