collards Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Any recommendations for a large amount of soft plastics. They may be the brand names companies, but other suggestions and boxes that are just not fishing related. Thanks Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 I like to keep my softrplastic in their original bags. For years I used a BPS XL worm bag but I have since started using a deep Plano box for Senkos/worms and a Flambeau Outdoors 4510 for everything else. The Flambeau has divider sections, which I glued in place, that can keep things in order. I like it so far. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 Are they still in the original bags or are they loose? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 3, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 3, 2020 I don’t own a boat so I have bring it all with me. I use Plano 3600 boxes with the dividers arranged vertically which allows me to fit more in the bag. Mike Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 I have mine loose in plastic boxes. Most of mine are homemade so there is no bag. I tried keeping Zman stuff in bags but it stuck together and got flat. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 My dentist gives me a toothbrushing kit twice a year and the items come in a sturdy ziplock plastic cotainer thats ideal for soft plastics . Between the three of us I get six a year . Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 Okay what I do is this Plastics in original bags - Plano 3607 (open compartment) - boxes divided by style. Paddletails in one, critters in another, worms in a third - all labeled with type Plastics out of original bags - Plymor 5x5 bags, rolled up and put into Plano 3606 boxes (6 compartment) - again labeled by type. Boxes go in a Cabelas Advanced Angler II bag - I get seven boxes in that (6 in the main compartment, one in the front pocket). Side pockets take things I can't fit in the boxes - like my Eco Pro Swing Shads still in original packaging. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 All in Plano 3600 boxes for me. different box of each type...worms, creatures, etc. I have eight boxes in an old gym bag (remember the old gym bags) and stow it under the step to the front deck I built for my boat. Quote
primetime Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I don't like taking soft plastics out of original bags, or out of any bag...I typically just fill a small tackle bag (3600 size) and it can fit 30 packs of baits or so.....Does the job, you can fit the terminal tackle/Jigs you need in the pockets....I use mostly soft baits, so I typically just put one box of lures on the bottom, then jam the bags on top, use the pockets for everything else like leader etc... I find if I take plastics out of bags they end up drying out faster, if box flips, they bleed etc....A plastics binder is nice because you can just clip it on to your belt. Quote

I have about 3000 bags so I need large storage areas. This is not for taking them fishing as I have many bags of all sizes and backpacks, but to store at home. Quote

5/0 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 2 minutes ago, collards said: Do they sweat? Thanks you No for the most part if baits are in original packaging. For baits where the original packaging has gotten beat up I’ve transferred them to freezer ziplocks. Gotta keep an eye on those, they break down faster than the original. Use them first, or switch to a new ziplock. I cut up old file sleeves and label them as dividers. Quote

This is not for taking them fishing as I have many bags of all sizes and backpacks, but to store at home. I have the same issue...I store all sealed bags in large tuperware type containers to keep air out...I also have a ton of bulk baits from when I used to sell them online, and many are older, 2012 etc...I wrap them in freezer bags, and store them in closets, I seal the top with wrap, and they stay in perfect condition.....Open baits store well as long as air doesn't get inside, Freezer bags are the best, seperate by color, and they won't bleed or damage. I included a quick pic of one closet where I store both...I plan on listing them again, but shipping is annoying to sell them online. Impossible to get pics with all the different baits, even if you call them random, people want what was in the pictures....But hope this helps. If you buy the large clear containers at Walmart, make sure they are sealed, and they will last forever. I have bags I purchased over a decade ago, and they are still in perfect shape. Quote
waymont Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I keep them in the original bags, and store them in this big Plano storage box. It’s my self imposed limit on how many plastics I can have. 24” by 14” 1 1 Quote
Armtx77 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Once you figure out what works as far as colors go, it is easy to buy a bunch and keep them in a storage container than just grab a bag when you need one. I find myself giving the stuff that doesn't work for ME to kids at the local lakes. Usually accompanied by a couple of 3/0 EWG hooks and show them how to rig and fish them. I ran into one of those kids this morning, fishing that Senko and he says it killer for HIM...LOL Quote
swhit140 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I just use these storage totes with labels on the lid, I don't have a huge boat so I can just about put all my plastics in 2 of these storage totes. I just have them in one side of my boat compartment. I have most of them vertically in my totes so they are fairly easy to look through what I have. Quote
mc6524 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 On my boat I keep them in the original package and then put “like baits” in a ziplock bag labeled with the type (stickbaits, craws, finesse, et.). What I started to appreciate was that I was carrying way more plastic baits than I needed. Keeping the freezer bag to a gallon size for each type of bait helped me be more disciplined. Quote

Yes I keep them in bags , but i want to store them in a big container for each type. Great ideas guys thanks Quote
TBAG Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I keep them in the original bags, don't know why anyone would do any different? Anyways, I always kept them in nice Ziploc freezer bags when in my yak until I found the Plano KVD black worm bags. Absolute game changer for me and inexpensive. Bye bye Ziplocs. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 4, 2020 Super User Posted May 4, 2020 Here's how I do it. Step A - keep baits in original packaging. Step B - sort baits into categories, i.e. tubes, 10" worms, senkos, other stick baits, etc. Now, Harbor Freight sells canvas tool bags. They go on sale often, the 12" one generally is around $5 and the 15"one is generally a buck more. The 12" canvas bag will hold 30 bags of bait ( more of less), the 15" holds more like 40. Now just sort your soft plastics into different categories and go buy as many canvas tool bags as you need. 10 of the canvas bags will stuff into one decent sized beach gear bag and there I have a storage system for 250 to 300 different baits. When I'm riding in some else's boat and can't take all the stuff I want, I go through the seasonally appropriate categories and get 6 to 10 bags from each. That seems to be enough variety. Quote
