Is this stuff any good? I’m normally a 8lb trilene XL user on my spinning reels but I was just browsing bass pro and wanting to try something different and found a 1500 yard spool for $10. I did some research and I’ve read it is made by trilene. I believe I may have used this mono about twenty years ago but just wanna see if anyone out there is using this.

For those who still fish mono what are you guys using on your spinning reels?

Thanks. Would you say it handles similar to trilene xl?

I have no experience with XL.  The only other mono that I use is P line.

I have used it for years on ned rig and shakey head rods. The stuff is really good and cheap.

As to who makes it, I couldn't say but it handles better than my old stand by 5lb. Maxima,

Ive used it quite often, the last few years. My wife uses 3-Omega spincast reels. The line has worked really well in them. Has stood up to alot of abuse, and quite a few bass in the 5.5lb range numerous times.

Several local tournament anglers I've fished with use the Excel line in 12 lb and under mono applications.

Try Sunline Super Natural mono, better line and less expense. Why pay BPS for thier label on another line spool? I will not buy anything from BPS. Why you may ask, Sidney Nebraska home of Cabela's was decimated when the headquarters was shut down by BPS.

I have used BPS Excel 8lb on my spinning reels, and 14 and 20lb on some of by baitcasters for 20 years.  Heck, in the early days of me getting into bass fishing I fished frogs on 20 lb Excel.  Don't know who makes it, I only know it works.

I just dont buy BPS line.  Theres better options out there for less.  I had their xps  line years ago and I gave a big spool away.   I'm not putting money in their pocket for a product that's inferior just beciase it has their label on it.  I'll use big game before I use their stuff.  Sun line, suffix, p line, stren and Berkley make good monos.  Super natural  and suffix seige is what I have in the shed.  I also have a big spool of.big game.

I don’t see where it’s cheaper. TW has the sunline at $6.99 for a 330yd spool of 12, where as the BPS Excel is $10.99 for 1200yds of 12. Anyway I have used the Excel for probably 25 years without issue, it’s always been good line for me. I wouldn’t hesitate to try the Sunline stuff though, they make really good line. I have had nothing but bad experience with Berkley line so I can’t recommend them.

Never tried sunline but have read a lot of bad reviews on it, but that’s like anything. Guess I will have to try it

The price is the only reason I wanna try bps excel. $10 for 1200 yards. I fish and need to respool a lot

Look at line diameter to compare physical properties, strength is related to psi pounds per square inch. I assumed you use 10 lb or less XL for spinning reels. If you use higher lb test on baitcasting reel use Big Game, good line and inexpensive.

PS, Tackle Warehouse list line dia for most line.

Only my opinion but the BPS Excel Mono use to be great mono. Equal to Trilene XL in my opinion. In the 80’s and 90’s that is. Something happened, something is different. Basically have used Trilene and Stren XL’s and XT’s my whole life.

I’ve been trying different monos and have found SUNLINE Super and McCoy to be decent line.

Trilene is a Berkley brand name and Berkley makes a lot of private label lines for discount stores. BPS contracts with several line companies like Berkley and awards contracts based on price so the supplier changes annually.

And considering that Berkley's parent corp is also the parent corp of Stren...well, things get a little fuzzy.

DuPont got out of the fishing business over a decade ago and sold the Louisana Stren plant to Vicious line company and Nylon (Polyimde) production to Brazil.

GE sold thier plastic division in NY to Saudis about the same time. The problem was EPA regulations got to be severe. Phillips followed and the combination of suppliers moving off shore or no longer in production on some thermal plastics created a crisis in the aerospace business and a few highend engineering are no longer availble.

When you considered no new engineering plastics have been developed the passed 20 years meeting defense contracts regulations that require using only approved American suppliers, no off shore materials, contracts had to be modified.

Today very few fishing lines are made in America, it's difficult to meet regulations.

Your Dupont Stren no longer exist.
