I bought a reel from Ali Express (Fishband GH100) and there is a gap between the spool and reel body that allows line to get stuck when it backlashes. The gap is between 0.012" and 0.015". I was thinking of adding some kind of material (epoxy, super glue, shim tape, scotch tape, etc.) to fill that gap.  This seems like a daunting task to get just right as to fix the problem permanently and not ruin the reel. Does anyone have suggestions?

I'm using this for BFS so I don't want to go to larger diameter line (quite the opposite in fact, I'd like to go down a size.)  Since it came from China, any solution that would involve shipping it back to the seller wouldn't be worth it.

Maybe slightly under-spooling will help. You can pull off a long cast worth of lune plus some and tape the line. This helps keep backlash from going too deep. As for the reel itself it is what it is. An inexpensive reel built to loose tolerances.

This is one of those reels ive seen all over youtube and have honestly wondered if some company is paying people to push these things.

It's possible, but I'd exclude The Reel Test. He's a Shimano fanboy and a bit of a jerk, but not a shill. He's put the GH100 at the top of the list for el cheapo bfs Ali reels as far as actual casting capability goes.

Many years ago people used clear nail polish on the spool of their Penn conventional reels when the line was smaller than the gap between the spool and the frame.  It might be a left coast thing.

Yeah I don't know any of these people personally so I'm just basing it off my perceived product quality.

Just curious and this is as far as I go into inquiring.....  What possessed you to buy this reel in the first place?

Thanks for the suggestion, sounds like it might work.

Use it for another technique that is suitable for larger dia line or cut your losses and move on.

Edit

I just read the original post again.  I’d cut my losses.

Legacy Abu Ambassador reels had .012 nominal clearence between the reel frame side plates and od of the spool because of all the tolerances between the frame, side plates and spool. Today's precision 1 piece frames eliminate most of the tolerance stack up issues reducing cleanse to less then .010.

The obvious soluation is use line .012D or greater with the subject reel.
