Super User FryDog62 Posted March 24, 2020 Super User Posted March 24, 2020 I didn’t see many discounts around the Classic this year as Coronavirus was just kicking into gear, but I wonder now how prices will/won’t change. You could argue on one hand many people are losing their jobs or are so focused on buying toilet paper, stocking up food, etc that they are spending less on recreational items like fishing gear – hence there will be more sales to lure more buyers. The other argument is fishing can be a great activity you can do by yourself (or with limited numbers of people) and a chance to get outside and beat isolated quarantining – therefore demand actually stays normal or increases and so do prices. I also wonder with so many industry manufacturers supply chain in Asia/China that products will be delayed. Most retailers probably loaded up for the beginning of the season, but maybe mid year will be sold out and/or backordered. Supply-Demand will be interesting. Anyone from the retail or tackle industry have a perspective on supply/ordering and where prices might go? Quote
Super User Angry John Posted March 24, 2020 Super User Posted March 24, 2020 Considering that fishing is a Leisure sport I can't imagine that prices are going to go up the only thing driving prices up would be inflation. If people have no access money resale is also going to plummet Quote
Will1248 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Discount bait and tackle has a sale right now. Got some cheap war eagle spinners Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted March 24, 2020 Super User Posted March 24, 2020 Earlier Dobyns posted a 40% off everything, + $25 shipping, sale for their FB community page members. He explained that he was inventory heavy and cash poor because he'd loaded up on stock for the busy season. It's conceivable that others may follow in a similar vein if this situation persists. 1 Quote

I kind of see that as a possible trend, especially for the higher ticket items (i.e. rods vs. lures). Might find some deals now, but retailers/manufacturers won’t order a second round of inventory and will be out of stock and/or backordered later on. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted March 24, 2020 Super User Posted March 24, 2020 Not sure of the mandatory shutdowns but are fishing retail sites closed? I’m basically ready to roll at anytime. Most times I order on line because every decent mom and pop shop from the past is long gone. Quote

Most places are probably operating with skeleton crews and offering sales. Latest one I got notice of is AL offering the Tatula 100 for $90 - 43% off. 1 Quote
looking45 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 A lot of places, not just fishing stores, are offering discounts just to get some cash flow. Unfortunately, shutting down the store doesn't shut done the bills. They realize people will be concentrating more on food, now that a lot of people have lost their incomes and the craziness that's taking place at grocery stores. Most of the discounts are on the higher profit items. so they will still make some money on the sales. No one can break even and stay in business Quote
basser27 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Not sure how it will have an effect on prices but there sure are a lot more people fishing. 2 Quote
yosef Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Usually I spend about $500 at the beginning of the bass season. Not this year got laid off until further notice so my fishing budget is the first to be cut. I would assume a lot of people are in a similar situation and when demand goes down so do prices. Hoping when this all blows over I get my job back and there’s some good fishing sales. 2 Quote
gilkeybr Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Seems like there has already been a decrease in the sale prices of used auction items on Ebay. That trend could persist for quite a while?! We'll see... 2 Quote
HenryPF Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 If you consider your tow vehicle as part of your fishing gear, I see that ford, chevy, dodge have financing for 0% up to 84 months... Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted March 27, 2020 Super User Posted March 27, 2020 Wondering if ultimately we will see a shortage of gear due to supply chain issues because of the virus? Even though we both are working my wife is making me hold off on a Siebert order till this passes. I couldn’t convince her with the Dobyns sales. Will need to find a screaming deal to get her to let me order lol. 3 Quote

I was going to say the same thing. Weekdays almost look like a weekend in the middle of summer at about every place I've been to and it's just going to get busier as the weather gets better. It was raining this evening and there were still plenty of people out fishing. 55 minutes ago, cgolf said: Wondering if ultimately we will see a shortage of gear due to supply chain issues because of the virus? CrankFate Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 I see more sales for most things now. But have not seen it extend to fishing gear—yet. Sometime in April or May if people are still supposed to shelter, prices might go down. But I don’t know. I see more people fishing around here already, since there’s nothing else to do. Quote
LCG Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 I don't know much about global economics or supply chain complexities. But I do know that if ever there was a time to enjoy a day on the water with your spouse, kids, or yourself it's now. There is a lot of craziness going on, enjoy the time and health you have now. We all have more stuff than we really need and I am sure we can get through a season without buying a crap ton of stuff. I think getting out on the water will help a lot of people de-stress and let go a little. Just keep your distance and stay safe everyone. 2 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted March 28, 2020 Posted March 28, 2020 Oh I’m sure unfortunately, your going to see a lot of nice used equipment and boats for sale. If the shut down continues on past Easter On 3/26/2020 at 10:04 PM, cgolf said: Wondering if ultimately we will see a shortage of gear due to supply chain issues because of the virus? I don’t need any toilet paper but, I’d like a new dobyns spinning rod at 40% off Quote

She was good since I was helping a small business that was definitely in need of moving stock. I have been all over the sale thread today. What a difference a day makes:) Got a 6'3" champion bc, great for 16 ft deep v's, and a medium sierra spin to pair with my medium light sierra I got last year. 2 Quote
