I just emailed my lakes around me and ask them to follow up for opening since they are lifting it on so many states for fishing :)

Mousam in Acton maine here.... I awakened to a wide water open on the edge.. about 30 ft. and an open river down the center of the ice sheet. I give it a couple of days maybe?

Our governor sent an email yesterday. She loves angling and has issued free no license fishing....saying, "go fishing, it's a good social distancing activity."

Most of that open water was created by my boat. I launched thinking there would be more water than there was. I wasn't about to get off the lake, so I made more open water and fished for 3 hours.

I'd never seen a river of water cut down the center of the lake like that.... That's pretty cool. Anyway, no ice this morning. I rolled the dock in today and I think I'll lauch the boat, earliest I've ever done it soon.

That part wasnt me. Someone smarter than I am probably knows the science behind it, but almost every lake I went to check on ice conditions had a big strip of open water going down the middle of it. Small ponds, big ponds, and lakes all had it. Im guessing pressure ridges? I am 37 and have been making the ice out drive every March since I was 18, never seen those weird narrow openings before. I fish Little O, Arrowhead and Mousam a great deal. I had even started a bass club this year with the Trading Post and our Mousam event was a month away. I don't think there will be many tournaments if any at all in 2020. Very disappointing.

Where the wind comes out of Ash cove it sometimes cuts a swath and flips blocks of ice up. Ice here goes out two ways. It's still solid and the wind breaks it up or it just melts to floating slush then disappears. The past several years it's been the melting to slush route. It's pretty cool though when it breaks up solid. Huge flat ice sheets come barreling down the lake with the current and crash into walls with inertial to drive them. Years ago, the last time that happened it sounded like explosions. Things seem to melt more gradually now. Lots of things about the season changes are different. This is a busy area but it's a pretty great place. The lakes, the people, the trading post, keepin' it local. Nice quiet place.
