Hollopoint Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Hey all, I've been doing a lot of digging on this, and even have thoughts of possibly going custom. I am looking for a rod, 6-6 to 7' max, that will be good for throwing the deeper jerkbaits such as Xrap#12, vision 110+1 or vision 110+2, pointer 128s etc. Also bigger topwater baits. 1/2 poppers, spooks etc. I had the MB destroyer oneten special, and it was a awesome rod for it, i just didn't like the trigger on it for these techniques. I don't mind the triggers for everything else, but for jerkbaiting, wasn't for me. Awesome, awesome blank though. I like kind of a faster rod, to give good snaps to these northern smallies, but the rod has to have enough bend to keep those light trebles hooked up. I am normally running 10 or 12 pound co poly and fluoro, depending how much I want to adjust my depth, so that allows me to get away with a little faster rod that I like. I am open to production rods, or suggestions for blanks for a custom, please lemme know what you guys think. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 28, 2020 Super User Posted February 28, 2020 G. Loomis GLX 844C has worked great for me. It's a pretty versatile rod. The IMX version though is a little stiffer and less sensitive but will also do the job. If I was going all out and I was buying again, the 844C Conquest when I "held it my hand" felt awesome and a little softer at the tip than the GLX. I think it would be the perfect rod for this application. Quote

The 843 would be about the same. The reason I like the 844, it's just a fuzz heavier and I like the extra back bone this rod has for deeper (6-10 foot range) baits. With it being a little stiffer, it makes it easier to work those deeper baits. Quote

bunz559 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 I started using an Orochi XX Jerkbait Special recently and really like it. It has a nice snap to it. Plenty of power to cast and fish most jerkbaits. Probably would be a good spook and popper rod too. Haven't tried it yet, but when it warms up a bit, I'll give it a spin. Quote

I loved my destroyer for it, except the trigger. I haven't tried the orochis, but if anything like the destroyers, it should be one sweet rod. Isnt the orochi a touch shorter at 6'8 as well? Looking at just the specs and your review, it seems like it may be what I am looking for 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 The 110+1s no harder to fish than the standard 110,McStick, Pointer ect. The Falcon weightless worm rod makes a great stickbait rod. Another great one is the St.Croix Topwater rod, I personally like the tip better on the xf than the f that's labeled a jerkbait rod. IMO the 844 is a lot of rod for a stickbait, I could see the 783/843 kinda, but the old 782 IMX was a good one. Quote

The Ronin on the other hand, spinning rod, is 6'8. Quote

Ahh, I forget the second gen orochi bumped up to a 6'11 as well. The orochi xxx oneten stick intrigued me as well. 5 hours ago, rangerjockey said: The 110+1s no harder to fish than the standard 110,McStick, Pointer ect. thunderblack Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Are you open to spinning models? Looks at the MB Valkyrie 6'-11" spinner. I just purchased one it has the power to fish big jerkbaits. Quote

I actually had mike from DVT build me a spinning rod for my smaller jerks (3/8) tricker darters, small pop-r, etc. I wouldn't be against using a spinning in a heavier power for my bigger ones either. Normally when the conditions are right for throwing a jerkbait, It's windy anyways so that may work out better. Quote
thunderblack Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 I fish a lot of jerkbaits and prefer spinning gear. Just what I'm most comfortable with. 842s from Loomis is great too but not for heavy baits. I'll be fishing the Valkyrie hard In few weeks and it's rated up to 3/4 oz. Quote
Hollopoint Posted March 10, 2020 Author Posted March 10, 2020 In curious to hear how it performs. The specs look good on it for what im looking for. I've got awhile before the ice breaks up, so I have time to decide at least Quote
rangerjockey Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 The LTB is the one I use also. I have a Curado 70 on mine and it handles great... You should come to Table Rock and Bull Shoals, we have the best stickbait fisherman on the planet. I like to try different rods but to be honest one of the best sticks on Table Rock uses a rod I personally wouldn't use to prop up a Tomato plant. It's the Indian not the arrow. Quote
