tdryden1 Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Hey i have been using a lot of different lines in the past couple of year and i have found that i love mono main cause i can get it in clear blue and i do a lot of night fishing in the summer but i also user floro in the day time . i fish a lot of clear water place and i don't care for braid to leader. but my question is can i still you mono effectively for single hook baits i know it has stretch and i have never noticed a big issue with it but i just want the best line option for my situation . help plz cause i do fish a lot of night tournaments and i don't want to lose good fish. 1 Quote

tdryden1 Posted February 27, 2020 Author Posted February 27, 2020 So the stretch is not to bad when using mono for like jig fishing? and i normally use spider wire mono. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 I only use braid on a few reels. Normally only the ones I know are going to be used in heavy vegetation. Like when I visit Florida. Fished for many years with mono before I ever hear of braid. Still prefer a mono of co-polymer. Quote

OnthePotomac Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Mono is all I ever used for years before braid and flouro and still have a third of my set ups spooled with mono. I was even frog fishing with 20 lb mono. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 You can always do a little test. Spool up with mono, and tie a hook on. Hold the hook in your hand, like a bass might in it's mouth. Let out 20 yards or so of line, and have a friend set the hook. Do you think it will hook your hand? Or, you can trust that for 30 years, mono was the best we had and it works just fine. 4 2 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 I have buddy that fishes nothing but Stren 12lb for the reasons you listed and he catches a ton of fish with no issues. I think you will be fine. I use both FC and mono for different reasons with the same baits (ex. Senkos), with my personal preference being FC for most applications though. 1 hour ago, tdryden1 said: Hey i have been using a lot of different lines in the past couple of year and i have found that i love mono main cause i can get it in clear blue and i do a lot of night fishing in the summer but i also user floro in the day time . i fish a lot of clear water place and i don't care for braid to leader. but my question is can i still you mono effectively for single hook baits i know it has stretch and i have never noticed a big issue with it but i just want the best line option for my situation . help plz cause i do fish a lot of night tournaments and i don't want to lose good fish. Super User Spankey Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 I’ve never really walked away from mono. I can’t. Only braid I’m using is on frogging, pitching and flipping. Here’s been my thoughts on this for years. My better quality soft plastics rods are X-Fast actions and to use braids with no stretch I’ve always thought I was looking for a disaster of a rod breaking. Something has to give a little. Need a little bit of a shock absorber. But I could be totally wrong in my view. But I feel that I should stick to using a good quality mono. 2 Quote
Fishingmickey Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 I fished 14# Berkley XL clear blue florescent monofilament for many years. It is great for the night fishing with one of the black lights stuck to the side of the boat. Made it look like rope and very easy to line watch for the bite. Thanks, reminds me I need to get back into night fishing again this summer. Fishingmickey 1 1 Quote

Not a clue on the lumens, They were pretty cheap lights from the early days of Walmart. I think they were about 12-15 bucks for a 12" bulb w/ two suction cups. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 I fished mono for the first 15 years I bass fished...my dad did it since before I was born..I've caught thousands of bass on texas rigged soft plastics on mono with no problem..Also I caught fish on frogs on mono up until a few years ago but don't tell anybody cuz that doesn't work?, There are lots of good mono lines on the market that have better capabilities than even a few years ago so heck yeah mono can do whatever you need except maybe super heavy punching 2 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 Been using mono for many years, still use it to this day. 3 Quote

The stretch in monofilament is over blown! Read every test or watch every YouTube video on the stretch of monofilament & what you will notice is one end of the line is attached to an immovable object while the other end is attached to some mechanical apparatus which applies an unreal amount of pressure. That ain't how it works in reality! When setting hook the bass is not an immovable object. Before the mono starts to stretch the rod flexes. It all works in harmony ? 5 2 Quote
TBAG Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 I use mono on some of my setups and have for years. So, I have to ask, what do you all think the best mono is out there? 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 27, 2020 Super User Posted February 27, 2020 I used FC a few years ago on my bottom contact rigs. I never noticed any difference than when I had mono spooled on, but I didn't care for it. Now the only rig I don't have mono on is my punch rig. Quote

I use floro for my t rigs and jigs but it wouldn't bother me to use mono for them. 3 Quote
