Cityangler7 Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum, but I have been Bass fishing for over 20 years. I use lefty reels, and when it comes to low gear ratios, lefty reels are hard to come by these days. I know Abu makes them and Lews had a few , but I really want stay in the Shimano family. I have a Chronarch 201 E5(5.5:1), I use for cranking, but the reel is a little to bulky making all day casing with it semi uncomfortable, so I went looking for other Shimano alternatives. I picked up some JDM reels, a Shimano Stile SS 151 PG and a Shimano Engetsu BB 101 PG both reels are 5.5:1 gear ratios and I find that they are comfortable to palm and fish for long periods of time, however they both come with fairly shallow standard spools, I use them for moderate to deep cranking with 10lb Flouro and I need more line capacity, I know I can switch to braid , but I prefer to crank with flouro. From my research I cannot find a deeper spool compatible for either of these reels. If anyone knows of a site or person who sells spools that would fit these two reels that info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any comments . Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 I think for the cost, based on looking up what I could, if such a spool existed you are probably looking at least half, if not all, the cost of the reels. Also, based again on what I would, I think the spool capacity of these are the same as the current Curados (155 yards of 10lb on the Curado and 200m of PE1 20lb for the reels you have). I currently use a two reels for crankbaits, the Curado DC and the Abu Garcia Revo Winch Gen4. The Winch as the largest line capacity but I never really had to use it unless I was trolling. There is also https://japantackle.com/tuning-parts/spools-casting-reels/shimano.html for after market spools. Another option might be to contact Shimano directly by phone about the spools. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 For engetsu bb, you might be able to use 150 spool size from Casita since both reel are the same frame. The stile SS, you are out of luck even it is the same frame as Curado 70 but brake system is totally different. The spec of 100 size and 150 size on these JDM reel bass on braid diameter not usual 50, 70 or 150 that we accustomed too, I think the 100 size is bass on PE1/200M (10-12lb braid)and 150 is PE1.5/200M. The 100 look like to be equivalent to 50 size shimano that we’ve know off. For the cost of new casitas spool is 29.64 plus shipping (you still need to confirm if they are interchangeable), you might as well buy SLX 150 at below 100. The SLX will palm as comfortable as your engetsu and stile. 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Call the Tackle Trap and I'll bet they can help you. Very knowledgeable guys. Or call Shimano in Irvine. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 Base all what I know about those reels. My Finesse reel, Shimano stephano 100XG, use the same brake system as stile SS also the same as Old Aldebaran BFS XG. I choose this reel over Aldebaran 50mgl because of the 8 pins brake system. I don’t like SVS much for light bait, it is super finicky. I like the handle and X-drag that I can fish one hand. Quote

I'm going make some calls and search the internet to inquire. Thanks for the input. 44 minutes ago, OnthePotomac said: Call the Tackle Trap and I'll bet they can help you. Very knowledgeable guys. Hedgehog Studio sells the spool. OP mentioned that his was the BB version which, like @Bass_Fishing_Socal pointed out was the same frame as the Casitas and much cheaper. Quote

I found a Casitas MGL spool on hedgehog for $100, I pasted the link below, if anyone knows if it fits ,please comment, I will contact hedgehog to inquire. The SLX doesn't come in 5:5:1 gear ratio for leftys. https://www.hedgehog-studio.co.jp/product/3550 Quote

Okay both versions use the same lastest SVS brake system which is the same as Engetsu BB. If I were you, I would risk money into buying a used Casitas instead, that way if the spool doesn’t work you still have option of gear swap. Other than that you still have 2 reels that work. Added: your link if for casitas MGL version. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 Good luck finding one, the casitas has been long discontinued, but I have seen it pop up from time to time. The casitas, from what I’ve heard, is a nice little reel that cast pretty good, hole up well, despite of the reel is all plastic. I asked one of the local forum here who selling his casitas 151. Will let you know if he still has the reel and willing to ship to you. Quote

A Caenan spool might be a better fit. In either case it is still a plastic reel. OP would be better served by a Curado, Scorpion or Engetsu PG rather than dumping money into the BB. The Engetsu PG comes in micro mod 5.5 gears and has an aluminum frame and handle side plate. They are smooth and solid little reels. Good fine, in this case I agree Caenan would be better fit than casitas. I have been wondered, if new SVS would work on old break drum from 1st gen (red block). I hate red brake block from my curado I, and wish I could switch to new SVS. Too bad shimano are so annal about parts not a lot of interchangeable parts between model, only trial and error, unlike daiwa, only a few frames type and most parts are interchangeable. Quote
Cityangler7 Posted February 1, 2020 Author Posted February 1, 2020 So I should look to pick up a Caenan 151 spool? I will check Shimano parts to see if that part is still available for purchase. Thanks for the input everyone. Quote
Cityangler7 Posted February 2, 2020 Author Posted February 2, 2020 I ordered 4 BNT 4652(Brake shoes) and 1 BNT 5388(Spool assembly) for the Caenan A 151 dircet from Shimano, lets see if it works.I will update when the parts arrive. https://dassets.shimano.com/content/dam/global/cg1SHIFSEH/EV/16CAE151A.pdf Quote

Super User WRB Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 Don't handcuff yourself with low gear ratio's using small diameter deeper spools. The IPT difference after casting 40 to 50 yards is minimal between 5:1 vs 6:1 that you will not be able to feel the difference retrieving crankbaits. Tom 1 Quote
