Super User Oregon Native Posted January 27, 2020 Super User Posted January 27, 2020 Wasn't sure if I should even say anything but if your bored you can read this. It's week one after the chemo/radiation. First....I hope NO....Body has to go through this..... a cure is found soon. So glad my head doesn't feel like it's on fire so much....second I went to the Sportsman's show on Thurs...golfing nine holes with wife on Saturday...(almost got into 40's) but still working on the vision thing...crazy. And then went fishing for a few hours on Sunday...was rough but buddy got a few smallies. Then went and watched grandkids for four hours in evening. Was a long weekend ....one of which I don't think I could have pulled off a couple weeks ago.. Every day is still unique with the vision and strength thing...voice once in awhile about things not going fast enough and get another lecture on what went through. Two week count down to going back to Duke to find out what they got...what I do...and what road is next. Fingers crossed weather is decent...fish are biting...they make the holes bigger at golf coarse...and last but not least...gradkids don't get us sick!!! Tight Lines 14 Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 28, 2020 Super User Posted January 28, 2020 Keep us posted. Duke is an excellent facility and they use state of the art procedures, etc. All the best to be back to 100% ASAP. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 I went through 6 months of chemo in 2018. It wasn't fun by any means, but I know people who had it much worse. I had the folfox treatment, and while I know some people who had far worse reactions than normal on it, I actually had far fewer side effects than most people. And while everyone in my office was sick with the cold and the flu, I never got sick the entire time, which under normal circumstances is very normal for me. When I started, I had an extreme sensitivity to cold and was pretty fatigued at times to point I was afraid to go far from home because I might fall asleep, but then I missed a week of treatment due to my vacation schedule and the fatigue let up and the cold sensitivity never returned but instead I was fatigued and everything tasted gross -- there are some things to this day I can no longer eat or drink. If nobody explained this to you already, should you get the gross taste (which I think is normal with most chemo) my advice is avoid your favorite foods unless they are spicy -- for example I love Mexican food and use a lot of hot sauce or cajun catfish, and as long as it's spicy enough, it seems to cut through the gross taste and you don't even notice it. And hot sauces with large chunks of hot peppers seems to get rid of the taste for a while after too, where hot sauces without the chunks of peppers only lasted a few minutes after my last bite. Finally, good for you for going out and doing everything you would normally do. As soon as I got out of the hospital and I felt good enough to sit up, I took the boys and we rented a boat for the day and went fishing. I think that was really important for keeping my own spirits up as well as the kids and maybe to a lesser extent, my girlfriend. If there's anything else I could help with let me know. 2 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 2, 2020 Super User Posted February 2, 2020 Keep at it. I'm convinced attitude has a lot to do with recovery. My mother went thru chemo last year for a rare form of cancer. She went into sepsis shock, almost died, and claims she did. She contracted the sepsis from the catheter in her heart where they were administering the chemo. Knock on wood, she is cancer free although, still feeling the effects of the chemo 4 months after the last treatment. Get out and enjoy yourself and your family. 2 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted February 5, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 5, 2020 Went on a three day fishing trip up to Cumberland this last week with a good friend. From what we heard we did real well...conditions were tough but we got into the smallies, spots and largemouth. Had three weather systems to fish....very windy and cold first day and worst day. Second day cloudy and warm...probably 17 lbs for best five....amazing. Last day rainy...did I say rainy. Fishing was good till about ten and then they moved out deep so got tough. Very fun. As long as I slept around nine or ten hours (ugh..never did this before) and took my meds things weren't bad. Go to Duke in less than a week so trying to stay positive...very hard...having difficulty relying on people helping. Hard to describe....very. Anyway...tight lines 5 Quote

nick76 Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I'm just glad to see that you are not letting this thing beat you down. From what you have posted the positive attitude has been what keeps you ahead of the game. I love reading your "adventure" stories from each of the journeys you go on while fighting this. Those memories are great to have and equally as great for those you are spending time with! Keep it up! 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 5, 2020 Super User Posted February 5, 2020 Great report. Looks like you are on the road to recovery. Keep at it and sooner than you think you will be doing what you enjoy doing. Safe travels to and from Duke. 1 Quote
