RickB Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I'm probably the first guy ever to ask for rod recommendations Looking for a general purpose casting rod I guess I would call it for throwing lighter cranks & topwater. This will be a new setup will be putting a Tatula 100 6.3:1 w/10# mono on it. Wanting something under 7' say 6'6" to 6'10". Mostly walking the bank so looking for a shorter rod. Budget $75.00 -$150.00, I know that's a broad range but that should cover a lot of options. Also comments on glass/graphite blends as in my research I see a lot of those. Thanks Quote
Junger Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Lew's Custom Plus Speed Stick Topwater, LCPTWS rated 1/8-1/2oz. I mostly throw poppers on it, but I've thrown small spinnerbaits, shallow squarebills, 1/4oz traps, ned rigs. The jerkbait version of it looks interesting too, but it's rated 1/4-3/4 so that didn't suit my needs for my lighter micro poppers. Quote
RickB Posted January 17, 2020 Author Posted January 17, 2020 Yep, Lew's has been on my radar along with St.Croix ,Diawa and Dobyns Quote
swhit140 Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Falcon BuCoo SR, Fenwick, Dobyns Sierra, Daiwa Tatula, look around you can find some deals on rods. Dobyns does have some used/refurbished Dobyns Sierra series rods for $100 that I've been using for a couple seasons. Lots of brands/choices out there in your price range. Quote
Tizi Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 6'10 MHF Tatula rod TTU6101MHFB $99 SportsmansOutfitters This is my go-to multi-purpose rod. I have it paired with a Tatula SV TWS. Killer set up. Quote

But I don't think this particular rod would be a good multi-purpose rod for throwing lighter cranks & topwater which is what the OP is looking for. Pretty good for a lot of other lures, tho. Wish I hadn't already bought one...at a higher price....dang it. EDIT: I see the 7'1" MH-XF is selling at the same price. Anyone with experience using this rod like to give an opinion on it? Sorry OP. Don't want to highjack your thread. 2 Quote

Maybe whopper ploppers and frogs, but definitely not spooks or poppers, and definitely not small plugs. The 6'10 is a good all around for jigs, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and the like though. I had the 7'M/XF and it had a nice soft tip but moved up to the Tatula Elite AGS 7' M/MH, but not sure about the 7'1 MH/XF. Quote
NathanDLTH Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Dobyn's Fury 743 or 744, something like that. Reel? Probably a used Tatula SV in a 6:3 or 7:3 gear ratio, they can be found for 120ish used. Quote

RickB Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Less TP1 topwater/jerkbait looks interesting. 6'8" m/mf 8-12# line 1/8-1/2 lure. Anyone have experience with this Less line of rods? Thanks Quote
