So, initially the plan was to get a Lowrance Hook 2 or a Humminbird PiranhaMax when we finally got an inflatable boat. Long story short, we checked the local laws (here in Portugal) and since they weren't really written with lakes and reservoirs in mind, the whole thing is a mess. We had to put the whole project on hold for now.

I went fishing with a buddy of mine on new year's eve and a friend of his turned up to fish with us. He had one of those cheap Chinese portable fish finders, you know? Those huge yellow screens like a 90's calculator. Anyway, we had a few bites on the drop shot fishing a dock, but that was it. A few old timers joined us sometime later fishing for zander, and caught a couple of fish, 3-4 pounders, really nice ones. The guy with the fish finder was insisting there were fish right under the dock and that the old timers should drop the line there. And wouldn't you know it? As soon as they did, another 4lb zander took the bait.

On the way home, I started looking online for portable fish finders and found a few videos on the original Deeper. Most of the stuff they have online seems to be sponsored, either articles or videos, but a few were genuine reviews. They came out with a budget model, the Deeper Start. Ordered it a few days later and it just came in

Has anyone used the Start or any other Deeper model? What's your experience with it?

Thanks!

I have & use the Deeper Pro+ for bank fishing ponds. I like it and works great without issue. Only thing I don’t like is the weight, I currently have it rigged on my catfish rod and Shimano Sustain 3000 and it just seems to put a lot of stress on it during the cast. It’s a little tough to cast accurately but I’m getting better. I’ve used both my phone and iPad and can’t say I like one over the other. Sonar cuts out at 3’6” which can be a little frustrating since that seems to be the hot spot most of the time. Good luck and hope this helps.

Took it out of the box to charge and was just thinking about that. This weighs over 2 oz and I don't really have much tackle other than bass gear. Might be able to find a stronger rod but I'll definitely take it easy on the cast. What line are you using for throwing this thing? I'm thinking thick, stretchy mono, just in case.

Ah yes, forgot to mention that. I’m strictly a braid user and have 100% confidence tossing it that way, however I would suggest not tying direct to the deeper eyelet and to use some sort of snap since the edges of the eyelet aren’t completely rounded/smooth

Again, thank you. This one actually comes with a sturdy looking bb swivel snap instead of the screw on attachment points (cheaper, I guess). Will do

I have the Deeper Chirp + and absolutely love it! I have it tied in a short string and it floats next to my kayak. The detail and accuracy is amazing!

I have a pro plus and a Chirp +, and they are great. Chirp is a serious upgrade too.

My favorite story with the deeper is finding a submerged car (didn't know that's what it was at the time) just out at the edge of cast range with a heavy lure... sure looked like good cover, so I chucked at it and was rewarded with a 3.5lb LM out of a city park.

And because you can cast it, you can get into places where you might not want to put the boat.

Finally, the wide cone (`47 degrees) covers an immense amount of water. Helpful for finding features or figuring out the depth where the bait or fish are.

If the choice is one of the 4 or 5 inch finders I think the deeper chirp is a way better buy.

Found this. While it is a marketing piece it also is a decent overview.

Thinking about getting it for Father’s Day. But my wife said she read some reviews where people were having problems with the app. I personally haven’t heard anyone complain on the you tube reviews. Anyone know anything it?
