I saw the SK squarebill today in a black fire tiger color. I have saw the 6th sense black Magic  and others. These lures are about to hook me as I can't resist them. Has anyone had any success on these color cranks? What is supposed to be the optimum time and conditions for using black crankbaits?

Black is the color of choice for a lot of anglers in stained water, myself included.

They were pretty consistently sold out on TW for awhile for a reason. I don't know the perfect conditions for them, but I know when they're working they can really be magic.

Here in Texas we have the Rio Grande cichlid, which is black with blue spots/accents— especially in the spring. It’s about the size of a bluegill.

I throw the 6th Sense when the fish move up early with stained water.  Gives them something different to look at when most people on my local lake are throwing bladed jigs.  Offers a faint rattle and decent stock hardware.

In mid to late summer a black Little N, Bandit, or Balsa B with an orange belly is one of the best colors to use in the Atchafalya Basin. The water color can be heavily stained to muddy. I've been using this since the early 70's.

This past summer the Basin was muddy in most areas. This combo produced best out of all crankbaits I used.

If you can find it, there is one from Megabass.  It's the baby griffon with holographic eyes (Insect Matte Black, I think) and there is also one color called Shibukin tiger.  Both are amazing but they only go done about a foot.

I don’t even use cranks very often.  but I will not be able to walk past a black fire tiger in the store and I don’t even know what it looks like.

Exactly!! I think SK calls it Wicked Firetiger but the 6th sense one especially the one with those green eyes looks amazing. It's an addiction for me :)

Black plugs (crank baits) date back into the early 1900's and remain a popular color for over 100 years...nothing new.

My 1st Bomber lure was color #2 black late 50's along with the black silver spook color Heddon River Runt.

Black crank baits are essential night lures.

We used to (late 70's) paint a Spence Scout black and hang a tiny white grub off the tail treble hook and throw it when it was cloudy and stormy and work pre emerged pad flats and catch a lot of fish.

The solid black Bandit 100 and 200 have been confidence baits on rivers for years.  Nothing fancy about it, but it just catches fish.

Black is a staple in the musky world. Any bait any time it's one of the best options. Im surprised people are so hesitant to embrace it with crankbaits when all i hear about are black jigs and plastics.

I kind of am, too. That's part of why I finally decided to jump into it. I like fishing dark baits, figured I need to give it a shot with this.

Definitely. Black bucktail Musky Killers, Eppinger Dardevles in Black Magic and Grey Ghost and a Bomber 16A in black will catch musky, pike ..... and nice bass.   ???    jj

Traditionally crankbaits are used in more natural colors for bass fishing. But for me, black is a staple color regardless of species. I love 6th Sense squarebills. They’re my favorite crank. I haven’t been able to purchase one of the black colors, so I spray painted one last winter and did very well with it!

I'm tempted to spray a jerkbait black to see how that does.

I've had this bait for a bit now but have yet to throw it. I'm afraid it may scare the bass away. :MSN-Emoticon-129:

Paranormal Craw color.
