skekoam Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Hi guys, I'm looking for a line that I can put on both our baitcasters and spinning set ups. I'm not ready for braid yet. I was thinking of going with some 6-8 lb Yo zuri hybrid. I mainly fish small ponds and lakes that don't really carry and fish over 5-6 lbs. Thanks!! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 12, 2019 Super User Posted December 12, 2019 I'd go a little heavier. I run 10# Yo-Zuri on my Trion spinning reel and will be putting 12# Yo-Zuri on my new Fuego CT-H baitcaster. I'd also get a bottle of KVD Line & Lure treatment and regularly use it on the Yo-Zuri...really helps control the line-memory. Quote
Glaucus Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 4lb YZH for ML spinning - breaking strength of about 8lbs 6lb YZH for M spinning - breaking strength of about 11lbs 10lb YZH for M casting - breaking strength of about 16lbs 12lb YZH for MH casting - breaking strength of about 19lbs YZH is a little thicker in diameter than what is typical for the poundage, and it's a lot stronger than listed. Don't use the 15lb and up. Too much memory. It's great up to 12lbs. I use it a lot. Quote

Sounds like I should go 4 for spinning (since we go for bluegill a lot too) and 10 on my casting (strictly LMB). Quote

YZH is a great line if you're looking for something that's all purpose and you don't want to use leaders. I've had it break on me exactly one time ever. Regarding spinning, to be more precise, if you're fishing an exposed hook use the 4lb, but if you have to come through the bait, use the 6lb. 4lb would be just fine for the savage beasts we call bluegills. Hulkster Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I like Sufix Siege. I use 8 or 10 on my spinning gear, and 12 to 14 on my baitcasting gear. Quote

Even if you catch a LMB on the spinning with 4#, don't worry it too much. I've caught 2# LMBs on my UL rig which has 4# YZH when I use Ned-Rigs with it. Fun times. Quote
moguy1973 Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Can't go wrong with P-Line CX Premium or Yo-Zuri Hybrid for both spinning and casting. When I'm not using braid those are my go to lines. Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 12, 2019 Super User Posted December 12, 2019 Line should be evaluated by it's diameter. Example Sunline Super Natural list honest lb to dia ratings. Sunline SN 4 lb is .006 dia, 8 lb is .009 dia, 12 lb is .011 dia. YzH 4 lb is .009 dia, 8 lb is .011 dia, 10 lb is .012 dia. Mono / FC Hybrid or Copoly over .010 on size 2500 spinning reels becomes problematic with line management, baitcasting it doesn't matter. Good time to buy line as it's on sale at multiple places. Tom Your YZH diameters are a little off. 6lb is .010, 8lb is .011, 10lb is .012. 6lb on spinning is the sweet spot if you only picked one. Quote
mc6524 Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 YZH is good like, but frankly I use Yozuri topknot fluro. It’s a great line and you can get it now T Tacklewarehouse for $8.49. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted December 15, 2019 Super User Posted December 15, 2019 If I was trying to pick a single line to balance between spinning and casting setups, it would probably be 10lb -- of course if it matches with the lures I am fishing Quote

I upped the baitcasting rig to 12 pound because it casts just as well as the 10 while being a bit stronger. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 15, 2019 Super User Posted December 15, 2019 Sounds like you want to use not only the same brand, but the same pound test for both spinning and baitcast reels. What power rods are you using? I don't like larger spinning reels, which is one reason I wanted to try baitcast reels back in '09 when I decided to get back into fishing. I don't use over 8# on my spinning reels. (Again...because of the size of the reels I use.) I also use a lot of 8# on the vast majority of my Medium and less powerful baitcast rods. Personally I would make sure the line you plan on using doesn't have excessive memory when used on a spinning reel. Some others to consider are Berkley XL, Sufix Elite, Izorline XXX and McCoy. Even 4# will be strong enough to land any bass. The cover you fish in will be more critical to line size. I will say that if you chose 4# that you might need a leader depending on the rod. I've snapped 4# on the cast with small BeetleSpins on one of my spinning rods....a 9' fiberglass rod. I put a long enough 10# leader to keep the leader within the guides on the cast. No more casting lures into the wild blue yonder. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 15, 2019 Super User Posted December 15, 2019 I have never gone over 8lb on my spinning rigs, be it mono, or fluro. 10lb mono or fluro would be the minimum on a baitcaster..I am getting away from fluro, and using more mono. I've tried just about every brand out there, in the last few months, I'm really liking Sufix Elite, both the camo and clear. No memory, it's soft, cast's great and is reasonably priced, and it comes in 330 yd spools..Bit the bullet, and go heavier line on the baitcaster. Quote

I personally like 10lbs and under on spinning (although usually 6-8lbs) and 10lb and up on casting as far as bass fishing goes. Quote
skekoam Posted January 6, 2020 Author Posted January 6, 2020 So I recently put some 8lb and 10lb hybrid on our spinning and baitcaster reels, respectively. I'm noticing the line memory issue is really bad. Is this normal or is there something I can spray on the line to help with this? thanks Quote
