Shockwave Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 This year, I lost 4 rods due to various reason. They all got broken doing different things. One was stepped on, another was broken by something falling on the tip, another was broken from a hookset and the last was just broken during an encounter with a large northern pike. One of the rods was a Duckett Micro Magic, and the other 3 were 13 Fishing Omens. I'm looking to go with a different brand now and am very interested in the Powell Endurance rods. It seems like Powell has somewhat of a cult following here and I'm wondering what makes people fall in love with them the way they do. Quote
JLewis134 Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I didn't know anyone liked Powell on here. Quote

Yeah, there's definitely a cult following here for Kistler too. I dunno if the G Loomis following is "cult" since that following is pretty much everywhere. Quote
RichF Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Probably because Kistler makes fantastic rods? I have a couple older powell max crank rods. They're nice. Nothing special. Not flashy. Just solid rods. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 Check on the replacement warranty’s, you may need it. Dobyns is another popular rod make. Tom 1 Quote
swhit140 Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Lots of choices out there, depends on what you plan on spending. I have been updating my older rods out this year and purchased some newer rods. I've added 3 Dobyns rods to my lineup and I've been very happy with them. I have 2 of the Sierra series & 1 Fury rod. I did recently purchase a Sierra SA734 for $100.00 from Dobyns online store including shipping. After looking at the rod you could barely tell it wasn't brand new. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 23, 2019 Super User Posted October 23, 2019 You're in Wisconsin, I'd be joining the St Croix cult and be making regular pilgrimages to the St Croix factory store. 3 Quote

Hmmmm.......you may be onto something!!! This is not a bad idea at all!! It's a 4.5 hour drive but it may be worth it! Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 23, 2019 Super User Posted October 23, 2019 Oh my, just googled the distances. I didn't realize that it was such a long drive. I'd do it though - make a day trip out of it. Earlier this year, when I was off work recovering from knee surgery, I drove 4 hours to Springfield, MO, just to drop off a few reels at the Outdoor World Rod & Reel repair store AND wander around the original Bass Pro for a couple of hours. I really enjoyed the drive there & back - set the cruise control - crank up the stereo & go. 1 Quote

A buddy of mine has a cabin up that way that we go to every January. Maybe I'll add the St. Croix factory store to the itinerary of that trip. I want to pick up a Mojo Musky rod anyway so I might as well take care of that at the same time. Quote
Super User webertime Posted October 23, 2019 Super User Posted October 23, 2019 Read up on the current ownership of Powell. It makes me sick. Go St Croix Quote
detroit1 Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Jeez shockwave..it takes me 2 decades to break 4 rods. Maybe you should get ugly stix or get rid of that horrible avatar! ? 1 Quote
r83srock Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 The St. Croix factory store is very much worth the beautiful drive, dad and I try to go every winter. There can be some excellent deals at times. It certainly has become much more popular since they last redid the store(8-10 years ago) and things do get picked over quicker now. But B stock rods are usually available for half off msrp. One other place we found pretty neat is fisherman’s factory outlet in spirit lake Iowa. They sell only rods and equipment from pure fishing, but the sales are pretty awesome. Definitely worth checking out if you ever go that way. We tried getting a tour of the Berkley plant across the street (dad had been in many times years ago) but it was a no go. They did have a sort of historical show room, and the smell of power bait was everywhere! Quote

They always have bins of really marked down rods that came out of the factory with minor blemishes etc. Mostly cosmetic stuff you have to look hard to find. Quote
