After I broke the bill on mine, I got zero bites on any other similar cranks I tried. 4 Quote
Smokinal Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 ^^^There are times and conditions where one particular bait will get bit when others won't. I know everyone raves about the SK red eye shad but I typically throw a Bill Lewis. Well one day I was really whackin em on a trap (Bill Lewis of course) when my line snapped on a cast. After seeing the bait splash in half way across the lake, screaming and crying, I reluctantly tied on a red eye and proceeded to not catch another fish the rest of the day....for real 2 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 1, 2020 Super User Posted February 1, 2020 imagine that....a small flat side crankbait catches fish in cold water. If only there were balsa baits made for this for the past 40 years. Quote
txchaser Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 What are the conditions that have you reach for a flat-side crank? Quote

Not really sure what the reasoning behind it is, but a gentleman I met said they were good in areas with more current. I can’t remember what his explanation was or if he even gave one. Was a while back Quote

It feels to vibrate harder than balsa baits do to me, which could be an important factor in the stained to dirty water I'm fishing. Not claiming it's a magic bullet at all, especially since this was the first time in probably 4 trips it got bit, but we've all seen times when one bait IS the magic bullet, and this day was shaping up to be that way until it was cut short. 1 Quote

All year. theres hundreds of varations of a small flatside. They dont all throw minimal vibration ala a shadrap where its hard to tell whats going on. Theres 1 7/8 in balsa flatside squarebills that thump harder than a 1.5. Then theres others that are inbetween. Quote

This produces the "thump-thump" sound you mentioned. It is like shaking your hands fast which would create a sound wave that the bass will pick up in water. Balsa baits can be thinner than plastic baits and have a powerful movement in the water creating the vibrations you are seeking to entice the bass. David Fritts' Frittside crankbaits are made of plastic but it has properties that match balsa and create a strong vibration. Are they better than our Rat-L-Traps and standard crankbaits with or without the small ball bearings? No idea. It is up to you to get a few and give them a try. Let us know what you find out. *Also check out the Rapala "Brat" crank bait - there are two models : One dive down to 3' and one dives down to 6' ; both are a balsa hybrid crank bait I believe - Gerald Swindle and a few other pros use the Rapala Brat crank bait with success (Google for more) . 1 Quote
