# line for new setup

Good Afternoon,

 

I am going to be purchasing a Megabass Destroyer FMJ, and i'm having a tough time deciding what line i should use with it. I have narrowed it down to Abrasx And Sniper. I am still having trouble deciding what pound line i should get, i have been considering 16 or 18 sniper and 17lb abrasx. I will be fishing moderate cover with this setup: brush piles, rocks, and grass. 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs and texas rigs will be used with this rod. I have eliminated 20lb line because i really don't like casting a zip-tie Lol. What do you guys think i should go with?

I'd probably go with 16lb sniper, but it would be good to know your rod's power and line rating

Both lines are rated below their actual breaking strength. I personally don’t like fluorocarbon, but use 14lb. as leader material with 30lb. braid.

I use sniper #18 on my FMJ.

I have a curado 50e paired up with my FMJ.

I use mine to fish moderate cover with 3/8 to 1/2 oz jigs.

Works well but I do use line conditioner to soften it up a little.

Also just watch your line for any abrasion and retie if needed.

Another suggestion would be braid.

I fish 17# assassin on my fmj/steez setup. I’ve gone a little higher and lower with both assassin and sniper, but settled on 17 as it best fits my needs. Everyone has their own style, experiment and see what works best for you!

In my opinion, 14, 15, or 16 will work.  I  always like to recall that in the days before braid and flouro I fished 14lb mono for every darn thing every where on the tidal Potomac (except 20lb mono for frogs) and did not lose fish because of the line.

I was referring to line rating, which is different than lure/weight rating. Should be printed on the same area of the rod

For t-rigs and jigs in moderate cover I use 16lb Sniper. Love it. I do use KVD line conditioner every few trips. Not saying you have to.

Line rating is 10-25 pound.  Check out TW.  Power is not listed.  Those ratings could swing either way depending on manufacturer...Heavy or Medium Heavy.  I have Heavy with that rating.  I have a MH rated to 2 oz.  Have other MHs rated only to 3/4 oz.  I'm thinking Megabass would list it as a Heavy.

You're splitting hairs here with 16/17/18lb lines here. Try them all and determine what works best for you.

Agreed....or just close your eyes and pick one.  If you gave me three reels with the three lines you've mentioned, I would have a very difficult time telling you which was which.

I have a FMJ and I run 40lb super slick V2 braid. I think straight braid on this rod delivers maximum sensitivity. 

 

I know you're looking for fluorocarbon suggestions but you might want to try braid and see it how it feels. Especially if you're fishing grass with it.
