Power Poles

I’m not sure if this is the correct forum for this or not, but whom all had one of these?  I’ve never used one, but they sounds awesome.

 

i guess what I’m really getting to is if buying a used boat how much of a pro is it to possibly buy one that already has a working one of these mounted?

I did move it, just because electronics is usually referring to graphs and chart plotters.  There are a good number of members that have them, and others with the Minn Kota Talon product.  There are pros and cons to each.  Our site owner has Power Poles, so I bet @Glenn would have some great feedback.  I know he loves them.   The thing I noticed was a buddy launching solo.  He dipped his boat in, hit the remote fob, and the boat was anchored right next to the dock, waiting for him when he got back from parking the truck.

If a lot of your fishing is done in shallow water they are absolutely one of the best accessories you can spend money on....I love mine.  With 8' poles the effective anchoring depth is about 6.5', it will hit bottom down to 8' but unless its perfectly calm you usually won't get a decent hold any deeper than about 6.5' (depends on bottom type a little too).  So if you find yourself in shallow water a lot, Poles or Talons are money well spent.

This is also a huge bonus, along with just docking in general.  But if this would be the only or primary use of them I'd say spend money on spot-lock trolling motor instead.

I put them on my boat in 2016.  I sold them this summer.  In 3 years I may have used them 10 times.  My boat is usually too deep for them.  I bought a trolling motor with spot lock.  I use it nearly every trip.

Thanks for the responses and for moving to the correct location.  It seems good in theory, but I went over labor day and never really even considered anchoring at all.  I have a buddy who goes a lot who has one and he loves it though.

I was back and forth with the idea for a while putting them on my boat, and I ended up buying one Talon instead. Figured it was an easier setup and power poles and I got the 12' model. Also figured by doing it one at a time rather than buying two, I could see if I even actually needed two. In my opinion, I only need one unless I'm fishing in 20+ mph wind trying to stay on rocky bottom. 

 

I would consider it a huge plus for a boat to have either talons or power poles. Now my question though is how much more effective are they than a trolling motor with spot lock if at all?

Yes especially around shallow cover that you don’t want to blow up with the trolling motor. Way easier to pick apart a dock.
