I realized that I might need a new reel I think that I need a new reel because the Reel that is on the rod I have is a quantum smoke pt and the rod I have is a light power 6’ 6” rated 6-12 lb line and lure weight 1/16-3/8 oz should I find a new reel for it so I could throw lighter lures?

What reel should I put on it ?

I was thinking of using it for small crankbaits and jerkbaits and light trigs

First :welcome: to the forum.  Lots of great information here.  Lots of great guys and gals here.  (Well...way fewer gals. :D )

If you were good enough with a baitcast reel to cast 1/16 oz., you wouldn't be asking this question.  Not being a smarty here, but I've been at it 10 years and I can't cast 1/16 oz.  I have to admit that I don't get out near as often as most people on here.  Plus I started at a much older age.  Getting good with weights below 3/16 oz. takes practice.  I haven't tried my tuned Pixy with 1/16 oz. yet, but I seriously doubt I can cast it even with that reel.  Quite a few others can cast that low and do it with a variety of reels.

For me...light weights require the correct rod AND reel.  Not being as good as many of these guys, I need all the help I can get.  Most reels capable of handling a weight that low are going to be expensive.  One cheaper option is an older ProLite.  If you can find one.  Another option is to purchase a finesse spool for your reel.  DIY spools are quite reasonable while others cost about half the price of a new ($250 or more) reel.

It took me a while to get to where I can cast 3/16 oz. Shad Raps with no trouble.  Going lighter ain't fun for me.

Not trying to discourage you, but make you aware of the fact that weights below 3/16 oz. require more skill than a lot of us have.  Even with the right gear.

I did end up trying lighter lures with it and ended up using a 1/8 ounce panther Martin spinner for small creek bass I was only casting around 15 yards but it was far enough to catch a bass

If I was trying to throw 1/16 or 1/8 ounce baits I would be using a spinning rod and reel. I don't even attempt to throw anything that light on a baitcaster.

I use a Shimano X70 on a Gloomis Bronzeback to cast light weights.  1/6 oz is dicey.  It handles 3/32 pretty well and 1/8 just fine.  6# test fluorocarbon line is on the reel.

Are you talking about the Curado 70?

I searched the bay and couldn’t find it

I throw a 1/5 oz Ned rig with a Lews Tournament Pro on a bps Patriot 7 ft medium casting rod.

Aldeberan or the alpha ct sv are good options. I'm going with the aldebaran. I dont plan on throwing hair jigs though. Neds and weightless 5" will be my lightest.

Yes sorry for lack of info.  I like it well enough that I have 3 of them.

1/5 head with ned rig probably weighs almost as much as a senko.
