Would this outboard have enough power?

I have a 14 foot jon boat that I have converted to a bass boat. I have a 40 pound thrust Minnkota foot controlled trolling motor on it as my only source of propulsion. While I do not take it on any larger/rougher bodies of water I have been thinking about getting an outboard to get from point A to B a bit quicker. I came across a good deal but I just don't know if it would be powerful enough to make a difference compared to my trolling motor. It is a 4 stroke 2 HP Honda motor. In no way do I have any plans of flying around the lake and I don't want to over power a small boat like that. Just curious of opinions as to what your thoughts are or if I should look for something bigger?

Years ago a friend had a 40 horse main motor and a  2 horse 2 cycle as a kicker on his 16 foot v bottom. 

Wide open the kicker would push his v bottom about 4-5 mph. 

 

the 2 horse will have a little more power than your trolling motor, but personally If I were going to spend money on an outboard I would look for something a little bigger. chances are a 10 horsepower outboard might get your boat on plane.

A 2 HP isn’t gonna give much more up and go.

 

Might save your battery for your trolling motor but probably not going to gain much at all for speed.

 

I’d look into at least 5 HP. The old Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 and 10 HP motors go for pretty cheap and are solid as a rock as long as you know you to clean and maintain a carb.

I agree with @Russ E and @Dirtyeggroll about going to a bigger motor. I would look at around a 10HP for your boat. I would think the boat would have a tag on it telling you what the maximum HP rating is. I'm not real familiar with jon boats so they may not have a tag like other boats do.

Go bigger. After the first week you’ll say “I should’ve gotten the _____hp instead.”

Get a 9.9 or 15 and be done with it.

The Honda 2.3 hp engine weighs about 30 lbs dry,very light weight OB. Your 40 lb thrust  TM at full power moves your Jon at a slow walk,or 1.5-2 mph, the 2.3 OB will be at least twice that speed (3-4 mph)at 3/4 throttle, your don't want to run at WOT long periods of time. 

The 5 hp Honda weighs 60 lbs, about as much as a group 31 marine battery. 5 hp should move your Jon boat about 6 to 8 mph at 3/4 throttle, maybe 10 mph at WOT.

9.9 hp Honda weighs about 100 lbs, 3/4 throttle should push your Jon boat about 12 mph, WOT maybe 15 mph or almost on a plane with 1 person. Adding 100 lbs to the transum tends to reduce speed unless the hp is significantly increased and that adds slightly more weight; 15-20 hp Honda are 104 lbs and your Jon will plane easily.

5 hp should be ideal for what you are looking for.

You need to check the transum height for correct shaft length.

Two HP isn't very much.  The weight of the thing itself (plus fuel tank) will almost offset the power it provides.  I'm exaggerating a little but not much.  Go with a bigger motor.  You'll regret it if you don't.

Can you tell us more about the jon? I had a 14 ft jon mod V all welded with thick aluminum and with a 15 it felt like a slug. But a flat bottom lighter weight jon might be a rocket with a 15.
