Kayak clothing for cold water

What do you wear while kayaking?

 

The water is still a bit cold here and I am thinking about getting some NRS gear: Boundary boots, Endurance splash pants and the jacket. 

Anybody else use this stuff or have other suggestions?

I do and they're worth the coin for sure, especially the Boundary Boots/shoes. NRS also sells good gloves. I hope it warms up for you soon, my cold weather gear has been cleaned and put away.

When I fished in my kayak I would wear a wetsuit when the water was cold. Protection if you turtle.  Hypothermia is no joke. Faster than you think.

Neoprene waders.  They're inexpensive and warm.

I just wanted to add the importance of wearing a PFD at all times. During the colder months it's even more important as extra clothing can tend to make a person sink when it soaks up the water. Of course there's the hypothermia aspect as well. Whatever you choose make sure it's not too bulky to make your PFD of choice uncomfortable or not wearable at all.

Cold weather or not...always wore a PFD when in my kayak.  You just never know.

whatever you decide just make sure you try it out while sitting like you would in your kayak.  Neoprene sucks for mobility and many waders aren't designed for a lot of movement while sitting.  I use breathable waders and a waterproof rain jacket and layers underneath as appropriate.  I stay on water i know with limited chance of tipping.  If i was on moving water a lot i would invest in a full on dry suit and call it a day.

PFD is a must. I have a NRS Chinook and always wear it. A family friend who never wore a PFD drowned a couple years ago in the summer. He tipped a canoe and got caught up in milfoil. 

 

I actually tried a dry suit on last weekend. Those things are hard to put on. I had a harder time getting out of it. I may need to start a stretching program. LOL!  

 

I wound up ordering the boundary boots, Kokatat pants and an NRS jacket with latex gasket on the wrists and neck. Both the pants and jacket have an adjustable neoprene band at the waist. Plan to add non-cotton layers underneath as needed.
