Late winter jig fishing

Well, next month may warm up enough to start fishing here in Missouri. I'm hoping so anyway. I usually start with a jig. For years, all I ever used was a pork trailer. #11 pork frog, 101spin frog, and U3 split tail eel were what I usually went with. I always felt that early on, pork baits may have had a slight advantage, but I've been using plastic trailers for a while now. I've had great luck with Zooms chunk trailer in both sizes. I've also done pretty good with craw trailers- Zooms small 3" craw has done pretty well. I'm always going for more of a gliding, look on the retrieve in very cold water, as opposed to a more intense flapping craw type look. Sometimes, less is more when it's very cold. What trailers are you adding to your jigs this coming season. I'd like to try some new ones. Always good to have an alternative

3 inch havoc pit boss gets used 90 percent of the time when I am winter jig fishing. It still has a little action, but not the heavy flapping of the 4 inch pit boss.

Caught my first 2019 bass on this combo yesterday. Of course it was on a power plant lake.

Water temp was50 degrees.

A 4" piece of a stick bait works great. Also if you are throwing a finesse jig a part of a finesse worm works great too. Not sure what they think it looks like but ive had good luck with these trailers in cold water or tough conditions.

For me in dead of winter to late winter I want a slim profile but with a subtle action.

 

I've actually went back to the ole school flat rubber skirts. 

 

I like a small 1/4 oz jig like a Bitsy Bug Flip with Zoom's Swimmin Chunk. The Swimmin Chunk has a tight action, kinda how bass prefer a tight wobble crankbait in cold water.

I use a YUM Craw Papi or Christie Craw for my trailer for a majority of my jig fishing. The Craw Papi is my first choice in colder water.

Zoom super chunk, and super chunk jr.  If I'm fishing a light jig, maybe 1/4 or 1/8 ounce I'll use a Zoom finesse worm.

Right now im using zman palmetto bugs on a siebert g2 dredege mata jig.

I don't know what part of MO you are in but today on Stockton the water was 42° and smallmouth were liking a black 1/2 oz football jig with a black/neon beaver.

Super chunk Jr., Stingray grub, and Yum Wooly Bug 3.25" on 5/16 finesse jigs are my choices.

I was at a new pond and noticed a salamander swim up to the surface, then back down again. So I started throwing this 4" Zoom salamander and it has been working well for me

zoom super chunck, also like the zoom z-hog and z-craw. z-hog has gliding action(i remove the side flappers), z-craw has a real tight kicking action. both are good texas rigged as well.

I like the BioSpawn Vile Craw or the Rage Bug mostly. This year I'm gonna throw the Gene Larew Punch Out Craw as well.

If you're not throwing a sniper jig, are you really even a bass fisherman?
