My dad ate some from walmart and is down in Az for the winter, and was like dude we gottta cstch some of these. Well today caught 20 between 1.5lbs and 3.7lbs. What a riot! We eat gills alot and these are a very close second for flavor. Man the filets on these are huge! 6 Quote

NittyGrittyBoy Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 We had them in my home lake growing up in central Fla. Every now and then we'd foul hook one, I was taught they were a trash fish throw em back. Those are some healthy tilapia, strong fish. Ironically immigrant workers came in and started cast netting everywhere targeting tilapia (Nile perch) and almost destroyed bass fishing because they were keeping every fish they caught. DNR cracked down. Quote

DNR cracked down. We got that problem down here in Az with netters. This same lakes before they were bought out were being overtaken by netters. 25-30 bass 5-8lbrs. Every trip was sickening. And thats no exaggeration if u have seen my previous posts with pics those lakes are a freak bass factory. 1 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Oh yeah I eat tilapia now just didn't know as a kid ? Sounds like you understand the damage castnetters can do. Completely ruin a lake in just a few months. 1 Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted January 2, 2019 Super User Posted January 2, 2019 Nice tilapias they are a fun fish to catch. 23 hours ago, brgbassmaster said: Bread balls works, also i have caught my biggest one on a football jig on a ved once. 4 25lbr. Corn works well if you want to give it a try one day. Tilapias are pound for pound stronger than a equal sized bass and they are eager biters which is great when you just want to have a easy day of catching fish. 1 Quote

U do the corn under a bobber? You are welcome. Corn is good bait for many cichlid species and barely anyone uses corn unless they are fishing for carp. I throw out the corn with a size 4 hook without a bobber. I can see why the bass you catch are so thick and healthy they are most likely eating lots of baby tilapia. Quote

And i researched tilpaia and it said bass eating tilapia all the time is the equivalent of us eating bacon cheese burgers. There are tons of small ones lin8ng the banks when its warmer. 1 Quote

Yes bass grow quickly on tilapia. I fish a couple places in South Florida where there are lots of bass that are thick all the way down to the tail. Those places are loaded with spotted tilapia, blue tilapia, mayan cichlid, and other exotics. Yesterday I caught a 23.75 incher and last month I caught a 25 incher with 18 inch girth. Fishing these places has spoiled me when it comes to bass fishing and the best part is that I catch these fish 12 months a year without leaving my state and have no need to hire a guide to put me on the fish. 1 Quote

The typical 6 pounders I catch average in the 22-23 inch range, never seen one 6 pounds and under 20 inches length. The bass down here start getting very thick once they pass 25 inches and by then they start looking like a decent sized grouper. 1 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 thats really cool. I've caught then in Florida before, super fun. Wish I had them up north 1 Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 In Ohio Tilapia is the most common white fish served in restaurants and sold at stores. Usually when I see signage advertising "White Fish" it is Tilapia or a mixture of Tilapia and Cod. Super cheap to buy and eat to. Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 2, 2019 Super User Posted February 2, 2019 I found some in a pond up here and couldnt catch any on bread balls or piece of a live worm. I would throw the b.balls right in their bed but they showed no interest at all. Quote
