Brendan Roll Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 So I just bought my dad a Shimano Sedona 1000FI (5.6:1 Spinning Reel) for his birthday. And since there is still time before his birthday I am considering buying him rod to go with it. It has to be a Medium or Medium Heavy. My price range is under $100. What do you guys think will go with this? Thanks Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted December 29, 2018 Super User Posted December 29, 2018 Match the rod to the technique. If it's an all purpose combo I'd say a 6-6 to 7' MH, mod-fast rod. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 29, 2018 Super User Posted December 29, 2018 With a 1000 size reel I'm thinking m/l with m being the top. 1 Quote

JoeyT Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 Are you able to exchange the 1000 size for a 2000 or 2500? That would be a good all around size reel paired with a 7' med fast action rod. This set up is good for many techniques such as shallow tubes, senkos, small swimbaits, small cranks, jerkbait, top water and many more. Spooled with braid main you can add flouro or mono leader as needed. *** makes some decent rods for the $100 mark. Quote

I also own a Cabela's Tournament XT rod that's good quality, but they seem to be offline right now I think that's because they've been bought by BPS and there is overlap. You might look at Tackle Warehouse and Academy and set your price range between $75 and $100 and see what you can find. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 29, 2018 Super User Posted December 29, 2018 I would say the Fenwick HMG 6'9'' ML for 1000 sized reel. You might even look at a light rod. Personally when I think of a 1000 sized reel, I am using it for panfish, crappie and small bass. For me the 2500 fits a more general purpose reel than a 1000. 1 Quote

Anyone know the spool size on a Pflueger 640?) Quote

That is more like what I was thinking. I have 2 Fenwick HMG m/l rods with 1000 size reels and 6# fluoro set up for Ned rigs. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted December 29, 2018 Super User Posted December 29, 2018 I just realized we were discussing a spinning reel. Sorry. Yes, the 2000 size reel would be a better match for a M to MH rod. 1 Quote
GeekOutdoors Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 FWIW: I own two Sedona 1000FE and both are on ML rods. A Fenwick HMG 6'9" ML/F and a Fenwick Elite Tech Bass 6'10" ML/XF. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted December 30, 2018 Super User Posted December 30, 2018 ML to L rod all the way. I have caught 3-6lb Channel Cats on my old Ned Rig/dropshot rig which consisted of a size 100 reel and a ML fast action rod. My Trout set up is a size 100 reel with a light action rod. 4-6# line. 1 Quote
MAN Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 Brendan, I think your dad would be happy with any 6'6" medium action graphite rod you get him. I wouldn't overthink it since it seems there's is no specific type of fishing mentioned and its more for general purpose. 1 Quote
