Fury vs Bass X for rod upgrade

Just got a new reel for christmas and want to upgrade my current rod (7'1 MH/F kastking perigee 2). Eventually I want to replace my frog rod and add another one to use for moving baits. As of right now, I pretty much throw texas rigs, paddle tail swim baits, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits all on the kastking rod. Ive been reading post's on here and other places and the same 2 names keep showing up for the under $150 range, Dobyns Fury and St Croix Bass X or MOJO.

 

The problem is I dont have any nearby stores to handle them before buying. I dont want a heavy rod and I see some people say that dobyns rods are little heavy. I am not sure if I would like more of a moderate taper like st croix rods are known to have, as the casting rod i have ever used was this kastking rod.

Im a little ocd about things and would like to eventually have a selection of rods for different techniques from the same model or at least brand lol. Thats why I have narrowed down my search to these 2 since they come in different lengths, tapers, powers. Anyone try the kastking rod or have experience with these 2?

The dobyns rods are said to be some of the most balanced rods around. But their powers run light. St croix are known to run stiffer. My suggestion would be the dobyns 734. Its on of the most versatile rods out there in that pricepoint

I have a Fury 705CB and love it. It is very light and extremely well made for the price. When I was shopping for another rod I looked to Dobyns and found that TW has the Sierra series (next model higher) on sale for $119 until 01/07/19 for Christmas. So I picked one up. It won't be here until next week.

Between the BassX and Mojo, if it's in the budget, Mojo all the way.......not really even comparable. 

I currently own both in MH/Fast.

I have owned both brands... honestly not a fan of St. Croix above Medium power... they are tip heavy, cumbersome to me..

Like Croakhunter said, Dobyns actually runs light, not heavy. So if you want something along the lines of a med/heavy, I'd suggest heavy.

 

The Dobyns Sierra is marked way down at TW right now. They are a step up from the Fury's, and are actually cheaper right ow. Many of the split grip/micro guides are sold out. But they still have the full cork handles in stock.

I have a mojo spinning rod and a avid x casting rod. I find them to be great and their actions to be what I like, but I wouldn't call them moderate at all. My mh-f is just that, the tip is fast into a pretty beefy backbone. I really like it for Texas rig, chatterbaits, jigs, and trying spinnerbaits next summer. The mojo is xf and it's xf, nothing moderate about it

Dobyns Fury and St Croix Mojo Bass are among the best rods in that price range.

I have a Dobyn's Fury and a St Croix Mojo bass. I would say the quality and sensitivity are comparable but the rods themselves each have a unique feel. The Dobyn's rods power ratings are better evaluated by the power numbers (2,3,4) than by ML, M MH. If you have a chance to play with them that would be the only way to determine what YOU prefer. Otherwise I believe you can't go wrong with either choice. I do prefer the Dobyns Fury's longer handle when I'm fishing from my boat and the Mojo Bass's shorter handle when I'm fishing from my Kayak. If you prefer cork on both ends of your spit grip handle then the nod goes to the Mojo. I haven't had them long enough to verify this but I feel the Dobyn's Fury blank may be slightly more durable. IMHO I would eliminate the Bass X as a choice.

to clarify i meant heavy as in the weight of the rod. like how many ounces it weighs lol not the power of the rods. ill check those out tho on TW.

I don’t care for most st croix rods over a medium power. I do really like some of their rods for certain applications though. The fury is a great rod for moving baits. The 4 power is very versatile for baits in that 3/8 to 3/4 oz range. 

 

Build quality on both are are top notch

+1 Dobyns 704c. rods in the series your budget allows are well made and a  versatile rod power / action .

If you’re looking to purchase now I’d suggest the same as another poster that you head to TW and check out the Dobyns Sierra rods on clearance. I’m a big fan of St Croix and you can’t go wrong with either, and generally I’ve preferred build quality on my St Croixs.  But the deal on the Sierra is too good too pass up and gets you up a tier from the rods you’re looking at but for less money. Hint, buy a TW electronic gift card first 10% off, then use that to buy the (rods) you want.

Is the Sierra significantly better than the Fury?

I love my 733 fury for paddletails and senkos, it's really well balanced and pretty sensitive too. I've fished the Furies and Mojo bass rods side by side and I definetly prefer the Furies. The Mojos are just too stiff for my liking. If I were you i'd definetly get the Dibyns Sierra on TW right now, mine should come in tomorrow.

I have no personal experience with either the Fury or the Sierra, my experience with Dobyns has been with Champ and Champ EXtremes. However I’ve heard from many experienced users here that the Sierra is a real step up from the Fury. And given you can get a Sierra cheaper then a Fury on TW right now it’s a no brained.

 

I picked up a Sierra as a gift for a family member because it was just too good a deal, and Dobyns offers a 4 power in the Sierra spinning rods and this individual is not skilled with a baitcaster and is always under gunned with their lighter spinning rods.

My 735 Sierra came in today. First impression it is extremely light in weight. I paired it with a Shimano SLX. I threw some line on real quick and practiced flippin in the yard. It is the most sensitive rod I own. Spring and summer can't come fast enough. I'm really glad I stepped up but I still love my Fury.

Mine 734 came in today too! It looks awesome and balances really well with all my reels, my chronarch balanced the best though.
