Damage or just a scuff?

Hi guys, 

 

So i just bought a new G Loomis E6X casting rod and was super stoked to try it out. i went out bank fishing with a buddy of mine and I decided to hand him the rod to see how he liked it (my stupid decision). He was twitching a popping frog a couple times when he went a little too close to a concrete ledge and nicked the rod on the concrete. I inspected the rod and it only looks like a scuff but I am a bit paranoid if it got permanently damaged? I'm relatively new to fishing and not sure whether it's damaged or if its just a scuff. Any advice would be appreciated!

Dunno Paul,

     I zoomed in on your picture pretty good and it looks like there is little lines radiating away from the scuff/scratch line which might be cracks.  It may just be superficial and you'll get twenty years use out of the rod before you snap the tip off in your hovercraft hatch. Other thing is if those lines are cracks it may fail on the next cast or three or when it gets stressed. Maybe check it out under a magnifying glass or microscope and make sure you enrolled in G Loomis's warranty program for when it does break?

I have some interesting quirks. Some of them involve letting people try out or borrow my new stuff. The answer is always no. That applies to the reverse as well. I don't borrow or try out others stuff. The reason is simple if they break or destroy my equipment all I expect is a sorry from them. I am stuck with the bill to replace. In the past if I broke someone else's item, my hand went immediately into my pocket to give them the money to replace. I avoid that now by not borrowing anymore.

 

I have a whole rack of loaner rods and reels for friends...

I see :(. I have used the rod a handful of times after the incident and only caught a couple small/one pounders with no noticeable difference in feel and no increase in size of the marks. But yes I am worried if i hook into something a little bigger that it completely breaks on me. I will look into their warranty just in case, thanks for your response!

I know, it hurt my soul to see, especially since it is my most expensive rod too. I agree with your mentality on loaning things. Lessons have been learned i guess.

That's not a really thin walled blank, and it's fairly low on the rod, should be fine. If you are really concerned you (or a rod builder) can add a little finish or resin on it, can even put a monogram on it to commemorate fishing frogs in December in Canada???...

I would just keep fishing it but let your buddy know if it gets worse and turns out to be real damage that he's responsible. Then maybe pursue the warranty program at that point. Lesson learned about letting others try your stuff.

Just a scuff. Unfortunately fishing rods and reels (when used) get some battle scars. Its stinks when an item is new but once you transfer from your truck, bank fish, set in the boat a few times they add up. Loomis rods have both a great warranty and replacement plan. Fish it!

hahah it happened in the summer but I never got around to posting it somewhere and it was lingering on my conscience. Thank you for the reassurance!

Only time will tell if the blank is compromised. That is the kind of thing that can raise Caine with a high modulus blank though.

Most of my loomis rods have multiple scuffs, dings & scratches from flailing in the rocks. Only time I have had one break was due to my own fault. The E6X is their low end and I have no experience with them but all the others fish better with a few signs of battle!

Fish it and dont worry.

I agree, it looks like only a surface scratch. thankfully.

 

So, how did your buddy react when you told him you need him out of your life from now on?
