mrmacwvu1 Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 I hate my dad. Today my mom went in to the hospital because she had a heart attack. She was able to pull through. Even though I am a 1000 miles away I was able to pull the family together and make sure that mom has all she needs. He was not around to call my sister or brother let alone the other 40 people I had to call. When I talked to the doctors they let me know that all would be well. Yet there was one big void. This was your Job not mine. I lost you to Cancer 8 years ago and d**n near lost mom for the same reason. For those of you that Smoke. Please Quit. I have buried too many loved ones. Sorry for the rant tight lines brothers, keep you families safe 3 Quote
dave Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 It completely befuddles me to see people smoking. Smart people. Young people. Any people. This isn't 40-50 years ago, we ALL know d**n well what smoking does and what is in a cigarette. Quote

I work with a lot of them, and I swear 75% of them smoke. It just makes me shake my head. That and the people I know who are always broke, but yet they always have money for cigarettes. OP, sorry about your parents, glad to hear your mom is doing okay for now. It's unfortunate to have to be put in that situation. Quote

Super User Sam Posted December 13, 2018 Super User Posted December 13, 2018 Glad your mom is doing better and she will follow the doctor's orders about exercise and nutrition. Nicotine is a very strong drug and it can be very difficult for someone to quit "cold turkey." So stopping smoking is not an easy thing to do. Also, if your TP53 gene is not working to kill any cells that go crazy causing cancer then there is nothing you can do other than to hope that the chemo, radiation and surgery will remove the cancer. Not a fun thing to think about. Here is a link to a short review of the TP53 gene and how toxic chemicals (like the ones from smoking) have an impact on cells that go crazy: https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene/TP53 Once we discover how to repair or replace the TP53 gene we can start to eliminate cancers of all types. At least you have your first Christmas present: your mom is home. Merry Christmas! Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted December 13, 2018 Super User Posted December 13, 2018 Always a terrible loss. I lost my mother to an aneurysm, my father and 2 friends to alcoholism, my grandfather to leukemia, my grandmother to Hodgkin disease. It's never easy. Some things we can delay or prevent other things not so much. At 61 years old, I have come to terms with my mortality. As a matter of fact, I did when I was 20 due to a terrible jeep accident that left me in a coma for over a month. I am a firm believer that when it's your time it's your time and there's not a lot you can do about it. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 14, 2018 Super User Posted December 14, 2018 I have several loved ones that smoke. I hate smelling it and all the money wasted just to kill yourself. I tried one once when I was 14 or so and hated it and only smoked one more in my whole life. I struggled with alcohol for awhile as a young man and by Gods grace was delivered from being a drunk. I started chewing tobacco when I was 17-18, and chewed heavily until I was 26 or so. I quit when I was 26 and only chewed once more. I am no special person but I just quit. I do not understand the attraction or addiction. If I could quit nicotine, anyone can. I just dont have much tolerance for that. It separates so many families. Glad your mom will be ok. Your post has motivated me to attempt to help them quit again. Thank you. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted December 15, 2018 Super User Posted December 15, 2018 Glad your mom is doing better. We lost our daughter to cancer four years ago. She didn’t smoke and was oral cancer. Nasty stuff Quote
