Looking for a swimbait reel

I'm in the process of buying my first dedicated swimbait setup. Not looking to spend too much.

 

Right now I ordered the Dobyns Fury 795. Now I need a reel to pair it up with. Plan on throwing baits up to 3oz.

 

I've read some good stuff on the Shimano Cardiff 300. But it's a round reel, so I'm not sure how I'll like it. Anybody have any experience with these? Do they sit lower than the old Abu round reels?

 

As far as low profile reels go, any recommendations? Would this Daiwa Tatula 200H work? It's reg. $169 but I can get it for $129. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_Tatula_200_Casting_Reel/descpage-T2.html

The reel seat sits into the frame on the Cardiff, they sit much lower to the rod than the Abu round reels do. I haven't used the 300 but I've had the smaller sizes and they're very comfortable to use. 

 

You could get away with a smaller low profile if 3oz is the largest bait you're going to use. I toss a lot of baits in the 1-2.5oz size range on a 200B Curado.

Thanks. What's your thoughts on gear ratio? The Cardiff is 5.8:1. That Tatula is 6.3:1.

 

I'm guessing the 6.3 would be ok since I won't be throwing anything over 3oz. Or do you thing the 5.8 would do better. 

 

I'll be throwing baits like the BBZ-1 Rat in the 50 size. 6" Bull Shad. 6" Spro BBZ-1 Swimbait. Ima Glide Fluke.

Without looking it up, I'd guess your IPT would be pretty close with those two reels. The Cardiff with have much better line capacity with the heavier line, but unless you're planning on bombing cast, that may not be an issue. For the baits you listed I believe you'd be fine with either reel.

I have (4) Calcutta 400D's for my big bait applications...

 

Stick with Shimano or Daiwa, they are the top dogs in the bass fishing reel industry.

Thanks. Surprisingly, the new Tatula 200H seems to have better line capacity than the Cardiff.

Definitely have always heard good things about the Calcuttas. Little more than I wanna spend on a swimbait reel now though, unless I get a used one, which is a possibility.

Oh, for sure. I don't skimp too much on my other setups. It's just that this is my first dedicated swimbait setup, and I don't know how much I'll be throwing it TBH, so I don't wanna jump in too deep just yet.

I use a Tatula 200HD on my Fury 795. I use mine for hard baits in the 1.5 - 3.5 oz range with 20lb P-Line PF Original. It's honestly a dream to fish I love the combo. I think you would be very happy with the Tatula you linked in your original post. I used to have a Cardiff 300 but I just didn't like it all that much honestly. It's not a bad reel by any means just personal preference. 

 

*Word of Caution*: If you plan on running braid to leader....DO NOT get a T-wing reel. The leader knot WILL catch on the t-wing if you run a long enough leader that the knot goes into the spool. You can get away with this somewhat with lighter lines used with conventional techniques but try running 50lb braid to a 20lb leader and it'll give you nightmares. Of course if you run 4ft leaders this isn't an issue. Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the Tat. And I don't plan on using braid to flouro, so that won't be an issue.

For the reel I am going to try a daiwa millionaire cv-z 253a that I picked up on ebay, it came in a lot with a rod I wanted.  It's a far bigger reel then I have used before but it is surprisingly comfortable to use and I can even get a semi-palming grip on it.  It's also way nicer than the used prices on ebay would indicate.  Mine is a little busted up and from the little teardown I have done, full of old hard grease. But it's still very smooth and the little yard casting I have done with it shows it to cast will ease and control but still giving plenty of distance with a ~2.5oz swimbait tied on.  

 

The only downside is a lack of externaly adjustable brakes. But, it's still Magforce-V, so they don't need a lot of adjustment.

Tatula 200 or HD would be perfect.  Once you get to 4oz the 300 sized reels are better suited.
