One thing to keep in mind is if a rod offers a replacement program like that you are paying more for a rod than it should cost. Lets look at a $300 Megabass XX for example there is no replacement cost on that so the company isn't having to sell it for more to help offset the cost when you break it and only pay $100 for the replacement "fee".

loomis stopped doing their replacement plan a few years ago and their prices did not change. i was rather upset having a good collection of glxs (all of which i still own) and still bought a few more because i liked them so much. thankfully the xpeditor service was brought back after a short time.

i think its $125 for a glx replacement. loomis isnt going to loose much money, if any, on replacing it. they might lose money if you would have bought that same rod out of pocket again but you might pick up a similar rod from another brand instead.

youve got $400 in 2 $300 rods.

if you break a $300 rod and buy another $300 rod you have $600 in and one rod to show for it.

anyone know of any others who offer this kind of service other than loomis and st croix?

Brother, I'm not being argumentative, but I don't follow you're logic. Your a Loomis guy, and that's fine, they make a great product!

If you pay $300.00 for a rod and break it, it's gone. Loomis used to require you to send it back (either in two pieces or four) along with $100.00 replacement fee. That's $400.00 with one rod to show? That and them dropping the "over the counter replacement" why the bottom fell out of our Loomis sales.

it's not "$400 for one rod".  It is $400 for two rods, the first (broken one) and the second new one.

So it actually makes sense to keep braking them and getting them replaced to dollar cost average them, eventually the 1st one will have an adjusted cost very close to the replacement cost of $100? check my math... :)

First Rod: $400 per rod (1/$400)

Second Rod: $250 per rod (2/$500)

Third Rod: $200 per rod (3/$600)

Fourth Rod: $175 per rod (4/$700)

Fifth Rod: $160 per rod (5/$800)

Sixth Rod: $150 per rod (6/$900)

Seventh Rod: $142.85 per rod (7/$1000)

So it looks like your return drops off around rod #4 if we are assuming some shipping costs.  I spend about 5 min trying to write an excel formula but I took a little rye in my coffee this morning and I couldn't get it to work.

EDIT:

I feel like there is a better way to do the formula, but this works.

im not saying you are being argumentative and i hope you dont think i am. just wanted to point out the simple logic.

if you break a $300 rod and it doesnt have a replacement plan and you replace it, thats $600 with one rod to show. am i missing something?

I’m following your logic.

With replacement plan: one useful rod and 400 bucks in.

without replacement plan: one useful rod and 600 bucks in.

Assuming you buy the same 300 dollar rod.

@fishwizzard, you probably need to factor in a variable that equates to 'time spent with rod before breaking' - like a reverse-equity function....and somehow a depreciation factor that may not be equivalent....the calculation of each of those variables would probably fluctuate depending on the cost of the 'replacement plan' rod ---- even shipping cost is going to screw up your tables -- sometimes you pay; sometimes in-person drop; sometimes you pay, but you can break the rod into several smaller pieces; one time, I simply sent mfr a digital photo and they said go ahead and toss it out.   I am anxiously awaiting your updated product :)

Send a bottle of rye and a pound of coffee my way and I will get to work on it.

I used to do estimating as part of my job, so I am very good at making spreadsheets that no one will ever really look at.

Brother, I never took you as being argumentative and seriously hoped that you didn't think that I was. One of the things that I really love about this site is that we can disagree, have differences of opinions and discussions without WW3 breaking out.

To your point above, I agree! I would much rather drop a $100.00 replacement fee than $300.00.

Possibly I didn't explain my point very well. If I pay $300.00 for a rod valued at a retail price of $300.00 (with replacement coverage) and break it, I mail "them" $100.00 plus the broken $300.00 rod. I no longer own the broken rod, "they" do. I get the replacement rod (valued at a retail price of $300.00). I now have $400.00 of my hard earned retirement dollars tied up in one rod that is worth a retail price of $300.00. That's all I was trying to say. A customer actually brought this to my attention.

I just got confirmation of a free rod replacement from Fenwick.  I should ship out some time today.  The rod that broke isn't made any longer so they let me choose the replacement.  It doesn't get any better than that.
