im4fishnak Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I have a crestliner mod v welded aluminum boat, 18'. I have been trying to decide on a electric trolling motor. I want 70# thrust, 24V. but I don't know enough about them to make a good decision. Without money being too much of a problem, (im not rich though) which one is best minkota or motorguide? What type of control is better electric or cable? Any advice would be great. Quote
Cajun1977 Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 which one is the best? the one that works for you, sorry theres no magical answer here, they are both top notch Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 For steering, if you just troll, the electric steer is OK, if you cast and want good control in current and wind, then the cable steer is what you want. Quote
Tpayneful Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 in4fishnak, This topic has been discussed quite a bit and you can find out about some of it by using the search function and searching for minnkota motorguide for the last year in the Bass Boat section. Here are a couple of links that I found that may give you helpful information: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1187965072/0 http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1195155298/5#5 Two things that I can say about trolling motors is that you will find people that will recommend both motorguide and minnkota. You will also find that most people use cable steer. Research all of the options and make an informed decision. I am sure that you will be happy with your choice. Also....WELCOME TO THE BOARD! Quote
im4fishnak Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Hey folks, Thanks for the "advice" I followed the links posted by tpay...they were a great help in my decision making. I did a search prior to posting this thread, but didn't come up with any good results. I am opting for the MK maxxum, 70#, 42". or the MG tour 70#, 45". I was on the border with the electric steering or cable thing, but I have to say, most (99%) say go cable. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 Whatever you do, whichever you choose, just remember one thing: get the biggest one you can afford, those extra lbs in thrust are worth every penny when you need them in high winds or strong current. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 Whatever you do, whichever you choose, just remember one thing: get the biggest one you can afford, those extra lbs in thrust are worth every penny when you need them in high winds or strong current. That is very good advice. What made my decidion for me the last time I upgraded to more power was the foot control. I didn't like the size of the MK foot pedal and where the on button was located so I opted for the MG. Quote
Tpayneful Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 My buddy has a Maxxum and the best part about that series is that it has infinite speed controll. The knob is numbered from 0-100 and you can set it anywhere in between. I cannot comment on Motorguide at all because I switched to Minnkota in 1994 and have never looked back ;D All of my friends have Minnkota motors too. Quote
