Super User Boomstick Posted July 15, 2018 Super User Posted July 15, 2018 So I was supposed to go camping at Lake St. Catherine next week. I figured I would get the car loaded up and ready to go a day early, so I could find the few things I need to bring with me, work a few hours Monday morning (as planned) and then take off right from there. So I get the car loaded up, went to lock the doors and now my driver's door won't open. Likely going to miss my trip two weeks after this one (on Lake Dunmore) too seeing as I can't simply get the lock for a '92 Brougham I am so disappointed right now. This was the only thing I was looking forward to in what has been an absolutely terrible year for me already. I'm seriously thinking of just trading it in for a truck, but that will make it rather difficult to get a bass boat as well (I'd still need to get rod holders for the truck too to transport rods, which I don't think I can get locally). Might be worth it just for the stress alone at this point, as I already had parts to hunt down at the junkyard but ended up being hospitalized and using my vacation time to cover my hospital stay. It's unlikely I'll have enough time off this year as well. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 15, 2018 Super User Posted July 15, 2018 None of that sounds good. Hope you get it worked out sooner rather than later. A-Jay Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted July 15, 2018 Super User Posted July 15, 2018 You take the door panel off and look at the linkage in there? A lot of times when the lock stops working it is just some linkage that is either broken or popped free...If it is just the lock not being able to lock or having to climb through the passenger side or whatever then just do that for now. I mean it isn't a deal breaker and if it won't lock then don't leave anything in there worth stealing for now until you can get it fixed. Quote

I can't seem to get the door panel off without cutting it off. Normally, I don't lock it anyway because I had to use the key because the auto lock and interior locks were already broken (the rods broke). However, it will often auto lock and not auto unlock meaning I have to put the window down and use the key to get out for example. So if I get it unlocked without the right parts, I will still get locked in. At this point, I'm pretty sure I'm buying a truck. Not going to take my summer vacation from me. I've been unable to find the parts I need as it is, and given everything else I have going on I just can't deal with stress right now. Plus eventually I'll need it anyway for a bass boat, and I can get a canoe now too. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 16, 2018 Super User Posted July 16, 2018 Door panels can be a pain, there always seems to be one screw hidden somewhere plus all the clips that inevitably break, which is the exact reason i always buy a box of replacement clips anytime i take a panel off lol. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted July 16, 2018 Author Super User Posted July 16, 2018 So I did end up buying a truck. Got a '14 GMC Sierra with 26k on it and it has the trail brake package so if I ever get a boat, I'm good. Now at least until I get more put away for my bass boat, I can buy a canoe. 1 1 Quote

I almost bought a canoe too, but I'm going to probably have to wait a bit to get a roof rack, plus I have a leaking pipe I should replace. Not a huge deal, I'll only get to use it every other week anyway this year cause of chemo... Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 17, 2018 Super User Posted July 17, 2018 I wasn't aware of your chemo. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Quote

I honestly didn't plan to get into it because I didn't want to sound like poor me or anything, but yeah it's been a rough year. Having the door seize up was just a kick in the face. Honestly, if I could drink cold water right now, I'd hunt down the parts for the Brougham or try, but I might miss a trip or even two. I basically end up dehydrated for a week, spend the next week getting the proper fluids in me then start again. It's very unpleasant drinking anything even room temperature for several days after a treatment -- the best way to describe it is imagine you had a shock collar and someone shocked you every time you try to drink something, eventually you try to drink less. Trying to drink even room temperature fluids for several days and being constantly dehydrated and thus tired is by far the worst part of this treatment. On the bright side, my chances of survival are high and recurrence are low. So I just need to survive this year without going insane. And I should make it out a day late, maybe two depending on how bad the thunderstorms are. I get the truck at 11, so I'll see what it looks like later. 1 Quote

Dean try drinking room temperature liquids thru a straw. It is supposed to help the effects of oxaliplatin. 1 Quote

I found that room temp water doesn't work no matter how slow I drink it for a few days, but room temperature iced tea or gatorade is much more manageable. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted July 18, 2018 Author Super User Posted July 18, 2018 So I made it up there and nobody was at the park. My confirmation email plus paperwork at the park said checkin was until 9, but I called and the answering machine said it was until 9 only on Fridays and Saturdays. Gah! Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 24, 2018 Super User Posted July 24, 2018 Dean, first, your health is #1. You have to keep doing what the doctors tell you to do. Second, the truck will be a great addition to your auto arsenal. And third, fishing can wait until you have your strength back. Sending kind thoughts for a speed recovery. 1 Quote

My doctors don't tell me anything about not fishing or not being active, it's just rather difficult being active or being outside in hot weather after treatment because even room temperature water is too cold for me to drink for the first 3 or 4 days, and for the next few days after that I still can't drink cold water. So it's rather hard to not be dehydrated and thus tired. The good news is I now have a truck, and I found a used Lund Pro V bass that's rather loaded I'm seriously considering. I wouldn't normally buy it this year because I will hardly get to use it, but it only has 30 engine hours so it's quite the steal. The truck's also much easier to just pack up and go too. Quote
