Having "been there and done that", I would recommend that you get the largest one you can afford up to the rated HP of the boat. Certainly any size gas motor is better than electric for getting around faster and saving battery power for fishing. A larger motor operated at a low throttle setting is going to use less gas than a small motor operated wide open trying to go the same speed.

Anything will be faster than the trolling motor, but you will want to get on plane at minimum. A 5 might be a little small for that. A 10 or better would be a better choice.

Edit:

A used 10 hp it's that much more than a used 5.  And like wise a used 15 isn't much more than a used 10.

I would go for a 9.9 at least or a 15 with 9.9 stickers.

The 5 I would leave where it is at. That being said buy the best motor for you. are the lakes you plan on fishing HP limited? if not buy the biggest OB your boat and wallet can handle. Just cause you have more power dosen't mean you have to use it, buts it nice. If you get the 5hp you will be happy at first, cause your on the water, but soon you will want to run father, and faster and wish you had gotten a bigger motor.

I run a 15HP merc ( with 9.9 stickers) on a 14 foot V hull, with 2 tm's 2 batteries and 6 gal of gas. It will push the boat about 15mph with me in the boat, 2 guys around 12mph. my 6 in that same boat pushes it a 5mph with me. I have the 15 (9.9) because of Hp limits on local lakes, but some have been raised to 20hp, so I plan on getting a 25-35hp ( then put 20 stickers on it) . The boat has a hp limit of 35

"A used 10 hp it's that much more than a used 5. And like wise a used 15 isn't much more than a used 10." :-?

I don't get that. If that is the truth a 15 isn't much more than a 5. I beg to differ I have a used 15 and a used 6 and the 15 is way, way faster than the 6. In fact my fiends 9.9 is way faster than the 6

Oops.  Sorry.  I was referring to price.  These are current used for sale prices on craigslist.com for my area. As HP goes up price per HP goes down.  You get more bang for your buck with more HP.  Aside from that pesky 9.9 for $1200 throwing off the scale.

3hp for $275  =$90/hp

3.5 for $350  =$100/hp

8hp for $600  =$75/hp

9.9 for $500   =$50/hp

9.9 for $1200  =$121/hp

20hp for $500  =$25/hp

unless you are buying a used outboard motor, the cost of a new one will be quite high. i suggest you buy a trolling motor (preferably a 24 v) with a minimum of 75 #s of thrust. i had a little 10 foot basshunter with a 5 horse, and my minn kota 55 # thrust was much more quiet and it seemed to go just as fast. how big is your lake?

seasons greetings from louisiana

down here a 25 is just ok what most people try to use is a 40 horse on a 14x48

For a 14 ft depending upon the type of boat ( jon or V ) you can go with 15 up to 25.

Nice suggestion HPBB (NOT), and being the president of a bass club too!!!! You are admitting to being an unlawful boater and suggesting that someone follow your lead. You are basically a poacher by using illegal methods to take game fish.
